Gold CAC Population Report

TomB this would mean your MS66 is an 1892 and the only one. (Is it?) Then I find the coin below. I suppose there is a chance someone tells CAC a coin has been upgraded, but that would sure be hard to track and would only be on the honor system, which is certainly not scientific.

I believe the CAC population report is updated weekly or biweekly and I think this because in the past when I have made gold CAC stickers it has taken several days to have them reflected in the population report. If this coin is newly made with the gold sticker then it might show up next week, but if it had been made a while ago then that is a head scratcher. Regardless, I believe PCGS might update their population reports in a similar manner.

By the way, I do know of at least two folks who have taken gold CAC sticker coins and cracked them out or upgraded them and then have let CAC know that the coin no longer has the gold sticker. This seems like a more remote possibility, but it might have happened.

I just looked and the 1900 Barber 50C is there...and she is a beauty!

The little animated "CAC - MAN" are not there though.

TomB, that is from an old Heritage auction in 2013. Is your coin listed in the pop report?

My coin is the 1892 that is listed in the gold CAC population report.

The coin you have shared in this thread shows as a gold sticker coin, as well, when you type the cert number into the CAC database. Therefore, the most simple explanation is that there is, indeed, a missing coin in the gold CAC population report.

Now that TDN has posted the PCGS CoinFacts image of the 1900 Barber half dollar in a PCGS MS67 holder, it appears that CAC removed the coin from its aggregate gold sticker population report, but left the individual cert number from the NGC holder active in its cert number lookup. I find this to be a much less troubling series of events than missing the coin entirely in the population report, but would still prefer to have the original cert number removed from the lookup feature.

Chalk up another Gold upgrade! What a lovely coin.

I've been thinking about this coin and its cert number now and I wonder if CAC leaves the original cert number as active in the lookup feature simply for cases like we have seen in this thread. That is, for coins that they know have been cracked out they remove them from the aggregate population report, but keep the individual cert number active in case someone finds an old auction, thread, or other website listing of the coin with the sticker. In this way, they can show that the original sticker was valid (not a counterfeit CAC sticker) through the cert lookup while also keeping the aggregate populations as current as possible.

Of course, if the above is their paradigm, it might be better to put in parenthesis something like (cert number retired) upon the cert lookup when they know that a coin has been cracked out.

It still has to be done on the honor system. I am not sure if I agree with that. They obviously can't do the same with green stickers since there are tons of crackouts of those. (I have cracked 50 or more myself not counting the crossovers and regrades done with PCGS)

I look at the CAC population reports the same way that I view the PCGS or NGC population reports. That is, the numbers reflect the aggregate data points with any corrections included. Each database has to be interpreted and cannot be taken at face value. I have no issue with any of it.

If it bothers someone, then I guess they might look at the CAC gold sticker population report and assume that the numbers reflect the highest number of coins of any given issue and grade that might have a gold CAC sticker at any given time. This seems like a pretty reasonable hedge.
