Pre NFL season kickoff rippage!

While going through some packs recently, I noticed a few with rips/tears/loose seals that seem ripe for ripping. I intended it originally to be all football, but a 1980T BB pack is going to make an appearance as well. I'm still searching for an 81T FB pack that has a gum-poked hole in it, but these will be the first up... and if the 86 wax doesn't yield any star power, I have an 86 cello to add to the mix.

The goal is to have everything ripped and posted prior to Thursday's kickoff. If anyone else wants to join in the fun, feel free to post on this thread.

I just did mine a week or so back with the following (purchased from the OP):

1978 Topps football wax pack x2
1981 Topps football wax pack x2
1984 Topps football wax pack x3

1 pack of each down, here's the highlights...
    image
1978 - most cards had centering issues and lost two due to gum/wax, I was still happy to pull a nicely centered HOFer, but it would end up being one of the nicest looking PSA5s due to a surface wrinkle near the top
1981 - complete bust, quality and star power. These were the only packs I could figure out a card through the back, this one had Earl Cooper showing.
1984 - decent star power. Cowboys TL/Dorsett is the only potential submittable, need to see if it's worth it in a 9. Lott does not want to let go of the gum.

    Pretty pleased with round 2....
    image
1978 - another pack, another wrinkled Ray Guy. Think the Payton has a shot at a 9? Nice Blount, but probably centered too low to be worth subbing
1981 - pair of Dorsetts, might measure the Super Action, but think the L/R centering would keep in an 8
    image
1984 - Fair star power (and another Allen appearance), but didn't see anything submittable

Round 3 sucked enough I'm not even going to bother scanning. Another 83 SB card and Roger Craig, both pretty OC were the highlights.

Some better scans of the Payton.

It's being dropped off at the Long Beach Expo this week, expecting an 8 with an outside shot at a 9.
  • That Payton I bet will come back an 8.5 (only because of that tilt that's more noticeable on the back) or a straight 9. I have seen enough Rickey Henderson rookies to know the difference between an 8 and a 9 card.

I've seen those surface wrinkles on a lot of '78 Topps cards. Sometimes they're everywhere on the front of the card!

Well, quite the let down but more coming. Here's the only star/decent cards from the 80 baseball pack (sorry for the dusty scans):

And the 86 and 79 pack didn't yield much either... 79s have dinged corners from the tight wrapping (to be expected) and the 86s all have centering issues. Have that 86 cello ready and still digging for more.... still trying to find an 81 and 84 pack to rip. Here's the star/decent cards from the football packs so far:

The Sutter and Reds team card look really nice.

Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.

Thanks Tim. The Reds card is pretty sharp, but I think the tilt is obvious enough to max out as an 8. The Sutter has a soft corner.

But this pack is definitely getting ripped... probably tomorrow around lunch time, so I can get to at least an 84 pack too.

I'm trying to temper expectations, an 8.5 or 9 would be a bonus image

Brad, thanks for sharing the rip so far and looking forward to the 86 cello and whatever you dig up from 84.

Let me wrap this up before the headliner! Here's what else got ripped. I know the 82s didn't come from Steve as they were in my separate stash... but the packs were in awful condition. The 84 cello came from a BBCE box from a while back, but the seam was hanging by a thread.

First the 82s.... great star power, no rookies and centering/corner issues. The corners are expected from the looks of the packs.

84s were next. Roger Craig RC right behind the Bradshaw, and an appearance by Marino. Showing the Al Baker because it was probably the best centered card in the pack... but had the markings on it, I assume he's an edge-of-the-sheet card.

And last, but not least. From one of my favorite football sets (along with 79s). The 86 cello did not disappoint when it came to star power, or LEGEND power. One being a rookie card! But as good as he was on the field, this card is equally badly centered. Nice thrill to pull... I think this might be my 3rd or 4th Rice, but also probably the worst centered. Marino appears again and the Randy Edwards was the best centered card of the pack.

Off center or not, a Rice RC is a Rice RC! I'm still waiting to pull one...
  • ssollarsssollars Posts: 933 ✭✭✭✭
The 83 packs yielded a little star power, a nice Dorsett, but the other star was the gum card. It may be salvageable as the gum residue is very light.

    image

The 82 packs were much better on the star power! A couple nice ones here, the Guy was the wax card (on top), to bad the Munoz is OC.

  • ssollarsssollars Posts: 933 ✭✭✭✭
The 80 packs had no major star power (unless you include TV stars), but there were a few nice Browns!!

    image
  • That last 82 Montana is really nice. F(2) 1982 Montana, 86 Rice and 84 Craig. 49ers fan dream right there.

+1. And I always liked the Montana phone card.

Some HOF action in the 79 packs but nothing great. There were a few really nice ones though...

Not much in the 78 pack. The Moore has those wrinkles mentioned earlier. Most of the pack was centered closer to the Gradishar.

Some very sharp cards... pretty good mix of stars and some beautiful cards. Hoping it all converges for you on that 70 pack!
  • ssollarsssollars Posts: 933 ✭✭✭✭
Well, the 70 pack was a bit of a let down. All but one were in beautiful condition... except for centering image. That one was the Bell which was the wax card (on back) and was on the bottom of the pack.

After diner and the game, later tonight I'll rip an 1981 Cello to finish this off...

Well not a good way to end a night of ripping, had 4 of these to choose from...

    image

and didn't choose wisely. A handful of nice cards including a another Guy. The rest were off center commons.

Thanks for watching and to Baz for starting this post.

P.S. Photobucket was almost unusable with all the loading of ads with each click of a button. I'm on a super fast PC with 50mb internet and having to wait 30 - 45 seconds and sometimes over a minute before the copy IMG link would work is ridiculous.
  • baz518baz518 Posts: 1,252 ✭✭✭✭
Some nice looking 70s there, wish the centering would have been better for you. Thanks for sharing... wish our pulls could have been the highlight of the night, but at least it was a pretty good football game. Maybe next time!!

ETA: I noticed the same thing with Photobucket not too long ago, thought it was totally absurd. If you're looking for another site for image hosting, try imgur.com... pretty simple and straight forward to use.

Not if you were playing against a team with CJ Anderson in fantasy image

Thanks for starting the thread (and selling me the packs for my rip) and both you and ssollars for sharing the rips!

I ditto craig44's sentiment. Always nice to see some rippage. Thanks. While the '80's stuff is a little past my focus, I enjoyed the 70 pack
