New poppage with good and bad and questions

Ok I renewed and sent in a new submission for 15 cards and just got them back. I haven't sent in cards in 10+ years. Mostly 80's but one was a 79 Ozzie and it was the nice surprise in the group as it came back a 9. So that was nice but what was very disturbing was the bird/magic RC..... The card was not graded because it was 'altered'. That was not the issue as a expected that might be the case since it was in a screw down holder for many years. My issue is that the card has very noticeable corner dings now. Very very noticeable. I called psa and basically there is nothing they can do. Anyone had this happen before? I know they were not grading it anyway but this is hard to stomach

"If" the card was in a screw down for many years, it "might" have mashed corners, which would be visibly deformed and also somewhat dulled compared to the actual glossiness of the card. They would arbitrarily declare it "altered" for this particular reason, amongst others.

Right, I was ok with the altered determination but they really hurt the condition of the card. I know people will claim this and not be accurate but the card was a 7 or maybe an 8 on a good day if not deemed altered. Now it is a 4 with the corner damage. The lady at psa said I could send it in for damage review! I said how does that work when you don't have pics or anything to compare the current condition too!! The fact that I hit a 9 on the Ozzie rookie takes some of thing sting out of this but it still sucks

If you don't have photos of front & back of the card prior to submitting it, you have no proof of your claim.

I can't argue with the possibility the card may have been damaged further from handling. It was already delicate because the issue itself is very condition sensitive and those corners only need a little contact or removal/replacement into a card saver.

You may want to consult with an attorney to see if you can file for punitive damages with the screw down manufacturer. Pain and suffering. Mental cruelty. See Judge Judy. ;-)

Unless there is video from the grading room that shows mishandling. I'm sure that area has surveillance.

Corner defects will often be hidden when smashed down in a screw down. It may look like a 7 or 8 card when it's smashed down in a screw down. You remove it, slide it into a card saver, and send it off to PSA. The pressure holding things together hiding the corner damage isn't there anymore and the defects will be more obvious.
  • Old screwdowns are no good. It's rare for a good grade to survive years in those.Nice job on the Ozzie, though!

Even pictures from before you send it in will not do you any good. I had an expensive ($750 raw) card come back with a 1 inch tear after grading. I complained and sent scans of the damage and a scan of the card before grading. After reviewing my scans and their process was told there was no way they could have torn the card. I had cracked the card from an SGC case and was hoping for a PSA 9. It was actually the second time I had a card returned to me by PSA with a tear in same area of the card (right hand side an inch or two from the top).

It's a matter of preference. I salivate at the sight of an old screw down with vintage enclosed. Almost as much as bustin' wax.
  • What shocks me is that in 2016 we are still using (and psa has not created something better) card savers to submit cards. I HATE putting a card in one of those.... I am sure there are tons of people on the board who are experts at this but I cringe just thinking about the damage that can occur at my own hands!

So, now card savers are villainous destroyers of our precious keepsakes. I continuously rip that little piece of skin just below my thumbnail when inserting the cards to them, so I'm somewhat more concerned about my own physical deformities, that which cannot be corrected. I can understand the concern about your hands.

Screw downs are mashers. They should be piled up and driven to the edge of a very tall cliff.

Then, there's these 3rd party holders which can do damage depending on how much you shake them, or maybe the internal gasket is digging into your borders, or maybe, quite simply, your card is in an airtight holder and is suffocating as we speak.

There is absolutely no control over human foibles or errors. That's what makes us so special.

This leaves pretty much only one distinguishable option. A neat stack with a rubber band wrapped firmly around side-to-side and top-to-bottom borders.
