1986 Topps Rack Box Break

Years ago I purchased a 3 box case of 86 Topps Rack Packs. I sold 1 box to a buddy but held the other 2. I've been trying to downsize lately so I pulled them out of the basement ready to bust'em.

Should I save the boxes entirely, save just the packs with star power showing, or just have at it?

Box 1 is showing only a Winfield AS ins on top.

Box 2 has a Ripken AS ins in 1 pack, and a Gwynn AS ins and Fisk AS in the other.

Thoughts?

Anyone collecting these with any requests?

Edit: I'm leaning towards busting everything. I'm putting together a Topps Red Sox run and also stock piling Topps HOFers. So I'll definitely be filling some holes here.

I think you should bust at least one box.
If you do let us know how it goes and post some scans.
I've busted plenty of 86 wax boxes and I know its tough to find nice examples
    that will grade high.

boxes arent worth much...you have a better shot at getting a psa 10 sandberg....think of it this way...no real rookie power in that issue plus the boxes are 30 years old and still worth about $50....not much upside

Alright I'm gonna bust it. Probably Monday. Heading down to Baltimore for the game tomorrow morning. Hopefully I don't get rained out.

    Good luck with the sandberg

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

OMFG! I just finished busting 1 of the boxes... By the time I was half way through, I felt like it was an endurance test to get to the end!

Had a pretty good turnout I guess. The 1986 Topps HOF registry set currently has 37 cards in it. I pulled every card, with the exception of #10 Tony Gwynn. In many cases I pulled doubles of most of them. Still have to do a second pass to check for anything I missed. I also separated the other subset cards and star cards like Rose, Clemens, etc. for good measure.

As far as pulling Red Sox cards that I felt were grade worthy, that was a hard task. The centering on this box was so chronically bad that I stopped looking about half way through just to speed up the process. I'll definitely have to go back through to check.

I have pics that I'll post in a bit. Just need to go through a couple things before I get at it.

Only one I pulled has a nasty fish eye on his head.

    SOLD!

(Technically there are 2 HOFs on the front of this pack, if you count Old Sparky)

Here's a couple of solid pulls next to a 10 I have in my collection already. Maybe I'll send them in for a sub and roll the dice.

This is the haul of HOFs, based on the 1986 Topps HOF set registry.

Aside from the fisheye, that is one of the better centered Sandbergs I've seen. Tough set for 10s. The Ripken has a good shot.

    Thanks,

I'm torn on this. What are the centering requirements for their grading standards?

People can say what they want about 86 Topps...I think it is a sharp design!

If it wasn't for that stupid fish eye...

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

  • That's a pretty decent haul, especially for something that was just laying around!

Those Seaver and Rose both look like PSA 10s.

Some of the others might as well.

Those are some of the best 1986T I have seen.

I just busted the other box and had more cards of equal quality. I pulled another Sandberg with centering equal to the first and again it had a fish eye in the exact same spot. I've put together a group of about 40 that I'll submit. I'll get pics up soon for the second box.

    Thanx for the rip.

Remember opening a box with my son around 1990. Still have the cards.

    I agree - I like the design.

Good luck with your sub Adam.
