Registered Sets

Ups, what's that.image
There already were more than 3,000 sets and now there are only 2,898 sets left?
What has happened?

  • odd. They may have cleaned up dead sets where people had removed notes
I noticed 9 of my sets went up in the ranks on august 25th when "set composition changed" I assume some rarer notes were given a larger multiplier.
  • Yeah I noticed three of my sets went up in ranking even though I didn't make any changes.

Also noticed there are a lot of inactive sets that haven't been updated since 2009, 2010 or 2011. Makes me wonder if the owners still have the notes or have since sold off some or all of them.

People delete sets for various reasons. Unfortunately, no free bump ups for any of mine.

Sets also change composition when collectors identify new notes that should be added or removed.

Anyone notice that 1935-A now has 3 new experimentals to add to the $1 SCs?!!

As I've been selling currency, I just went in and deleted all my sets, rather than trying to pull notes out one at a time. I, frankly, had forgotten about set registries until a buyer asked me to delete a note I sold him from my list. I just dumped the whole list after that request.

I just sold off most of my graded notes and it was too much of a pain to retire all my sets individually so I just deleted all of my inventory.

    I had over 100 sets.

I will add back the graded notes I kept.

  • I wish more people would start participating in the registry. Seems like it's heyday was from 2008-2011 and then just went cold after that. At least for U.S. small size. Lots of drop outs and not many new participants after that. The PMG registry is much more active but I don't care for their format/point system and it's not easy to add new notes to all of your sets. It needs an overhaul. That is why I have begun crossing over a number of my PMG notes to PCGS. The PCGS registry system is way better. IMO.

Larry, it seems to me that there has been a nice uptick in Registry set participation in the last couple years (mostly as the number of sets in the small size FRNs has significantly expanded). But, I do agree it would be nice to see more people participate as it is kinda fun. The registry has, at least in a couple instances, encouraged me to try to pick up various modern varieties (or purchase some higher grade early "type" notes and stars) that I would have normally ignored, but need to complete/upgrade some sets.

Since I have purchased various PMG notes, I also have some sets registered there as well, but completely agree that the PMG Registry (for at least what I collect) is not as sophisticated nor as easy to use.

There are a number of PMG notes I have crossed over for my registry set (mostly higher value items that I am confident will cross - I've been burned a couple times by PMG notes that did not). Show submissions are best for these type of cross-overs as I can get an informal opinion whether the note is worth trying to cross or best left as is.

  • Randy, yes I agree on the show submissions being better for pmg crossovers and that's exactly what I've been doing too. I only bring my top notch PMG notes that I feel have the best shot at crossing and by showing them to Laura and Jason in advance for their opinion on whether it's a good candidate or not is the best way to go.

As for an uptick in participants, I haven't noticed that but then again I don't do many FRN sets at this time so I'm probably not paying attention in that category. But for SC and LT notes it's pretty much dead other than a handful of guys who have been around for a long time. I'd like to see more new entries and people who are active as more competition will motivate me more.
