Gretzky RC (real or fake)

Hi everyone.

I was hoping to see what your thoughts on this card I have. Is it real or fake?

I'd wait for those much more experienced then I to weigh in but it does have the print dot on his left shoulder that these are known for. Again don't make any decisions based off of my opinion, I'm a rook. It does have very clean edges for an OPC but not unheard of so again, wait for the experts that's just my 2 cents.

  • Well it's definitely OC or trimmed. I'm not a pro w these but i do have a very nice one. The color looks a little deeper blue that normal but that could be the camera. Hopefully a pro can chime in.

It's fake. What should be on his shoulder is a yellow blob. It is irregular on the original while this one is a perfect circle. It sits too high on his shoulder as well. While it does lack the o-pee-chee cut, the edges look off nonetheless.

I linked the article above with some hints as Jason said. Print dot on yours does look suspicious. Unfortunately, the pictures in his article don't work. I included front and back scans of a 1st print run and later print run original Gretzky from my collection for comparison to yours. Being able to hold an original and compare original card stock to a fake is very helpful and impossible to do with pictures. Card stock from O pee chee has a distinctive feel especially with a rough cut present which yours doesn't seem to have.

Sadly, not real. The cardstock on the back gives it all away.

The dot thing is a myth and only that I've never particularly understood. Why do we believe that someone can fake the rest of the card but not the dot?

If you have a loupe and another 1979 OPC card to compare it with, look at the white name on the front. The reprint name usually looks grainy or pixelated in comparison to the original cards.

It looks like a clear fake to me from the scan.

They certainly can get the dot right, but that doesn't mean they will.

    ^^^^^^

This is my mantra with high dollar cards. Fortunately there aren't to many hockey cards worth faking. That may change.

Even though this wasn't my post thanks to all for the education on Gretzky fakes. The one thing I know for sure is that I don't know anything. image
