First poppage!

So here is my first poppage. I decided to mix it up send in a few that I hoped to grade high and a few that I wanted to test my eye on. Probably not the best way to spend money getting a mid grade card rated but I looked at it as a lesson in grading.

The '71 Perreault was a huge hit for me. I was really pulling to 10 that one. I missed one that came up on PWCC a few months ago, how I don't know because I bought 3 other cards from them during that same time frame. Still kicking myself on that one. The Schmautz, Pratt and Orr were test runs for me I thought each would score one higher then they did. I got my lunch handed to me on the Crozier, Dryden, '86 Perreault. I thought they were solid....... Not so much. Live and learn. Now I'm pumped to send in my next batch since The September special dropped.

    Outstanding card Kevin.

I'm not a submitter but do the membership - many years. Last 2 in a row.

I've never had a 10 - bad eye and bad cards. image

I am right there with you and man it's tough. I have probably submitted 40 or 50 cards and have only got one 10. image I think I will just post scans from now on to try and get help from the board when it comes to grading.

Some I have just given up on, for example the 1986 Topps Football is really tough to grade.

Lotsos welcome to the board and I agree that Perreault is an awesome card, a real blazer.

    That hockey card looks great.

Scan the back...that's gotta be the issue

Those are very good grades especially for a first submission. Obviously great hit on the Perreault, but the McDavid and Eichel 10's are very nice too. Congrats.

Yes they were! Not over looking them but obviously taking a pack fresh modern day card and submitting it is a whole lot easier then digging up a 45 year old gem. Now that is the true test and I failed on the Dryden & Crozier. But like I said it was a great lesson.

Post some scans of your 'misses' and perhaps we can help find what you overlooked. Most frequently when new to subbing, misses are due to surface issues which also happen to be the hardest to detect via a scan. I'd be willing to bet at least one of the 6s, perhaps both, have a small surface wrinkle on the back. When I've gotten 5s or 6s and was expecting a 9 or 10, that's usually the cause.

Thank you for that offer I will take you up on it tonight. I'll pour a nice glass of bourbon and fire up the scanner.

    Thank you!

Since everyone likes to look at dimes we'll start with Jack, Connor, and Taylor. Also again I'll appologize in advance if you're just here for the photos but the wife's at work, I just put the kids to bed, ate a great steak, I'm in the middle of a nice bottle of wine, and I'm cranking some Hip. So if I run on to much for you, scroll down to the photos, I understand completely

Jack. Nice hit for sure. It sucks that he doesn't have a UD contract. Having his auto would be nice but like I said before, frankly it sucks. So it's not that big a loss. Maybe someday if he turns out to be the player that I hope, he'll retire and come up with a nice one that would be worthy of having him sign one of these. Until then ...... Well at least they didn't pull a UD black and just leave a big blank space.

Connor McJesus. If I need to search for more reasons then I already have for being grateful for my move to the Southwest 2 years ago it's that I'm in the same time zone as Edmonton so watching that team's games just got a lot easier. He played a shortened season last year so we'll see what happens this year but I can't fathom that he won't be in the top ten in scoring this year and most likely leading the league within 3 at most.

Taylor Hall. He's going to make for a fun watch this year in NJ. I think he really took the trade personally. The Devils absolutely hosed the Oilers on that one. If anything they are the team that sould have been talking to Montreal for Subban. Hall is one of the most gifted scorers in the league. Perhaps not a leader but the Oilers definitely needed to get more in return. Don't get me wrong Larsson is a nice player but not straight up for Hall.

Ok now for the misses. Well start with the one that has me scratching my head the most. Dryden. Perfect card in my eye. I'm really, really hoping that one of you points out something that makes me say ahhhhh that was it. If not I'm at a loss. I know some of you mentioned surface as being a big reason for a drop in grade. I held this card under all sorts of light from all sorts of angles and saw nothing. Like I said in a different post I have a bunch of these round corner cards and they do suffer from (roller marks?) some issue that produces chatter when you hold a raking light to it. Now I know 8 isn't bad and I should'nt complain. And I won't if I can figure this one out.

    image

On the back the upper corner is a wrinkle in the plastic that holds the card in place. I need to get a better scanner so I appologize in advance for the crappy scans. I saw a post about scanners a while back and I'm going to need to find it.

    image

Next is Roger Crozier. This is another one where I'm at a loss. To me appears centered, picture quality appears good, corners good, as are the edges. There are two tiny, tiny print dots one tinier then the other. One is by his right shoulder and one is between his left shoulder and elbow. That's all I have on this one. Help greatly appreciated.

Last is the Perreault. Again confused on this one. Perhaps it's slightly off center but if so not enough on its own to warrant a 6 for centering alone. I just got one of the card centering tools that one of the guys here was selling so I'll have to double check with it. I Didn't see anything under different light from multiple angles. Please rip away to help me find it and learn from it.

Alright that's it for the scanner tonight. Please don't hold back. I rather hear everyone's opinion and figure out what I didn't see versus submitting cards in the future that I shouldn't.

Thanks in advance to all who chime in.

On the Dryden 8, what you're describing as roller marks is likely the cause. Any factory line through the gloss will drop to an automatic 8 (similar to refractor lines on newer releases).

The Crozier 6 looks to have a fair amount of discoloration/staining on the back. The upper corners look fine, but both the lower look a touch rounded. My guess is this could be an 8(ST) which is equivalent to a 6 without the STain qualifier (two grade drop for qualifiers).

The Perreault is befuddling from the scans. If there's no wrinkle on the back (perhaps near the bottom edge, 3/4" in from the right corner?) a 6 seems pretty harsh.
