Room for growth in '80s rookies

So yes I know...collect what you like. I do.

I just would like to see what I buy at least retain it's value over the years, but wouldn't mind that growing as well. :-)

For example, what has more growth potential over the long haul - a PSA 9 1983 Topps Gwynn or a PSA 10? With 10s already so high, doesn't that disqualify many collectors, where a 9 is so affordable, perhaps more demand pushes it up? Thinking also about Ripkens, Pucketts, you know the guys.

My thinking is probably wrong there, lol...I just don't know enough. That's why I'm here! Any opinions?

I'm thinking maybe the huge amount of baseball cards produced during those years might keep a cap on prices. But I am
surprised at high the prices are for Ripken, Gwynn, Boggs, rookies in PSA 10.
But look how many more 10's might be graded in the future of those cards compared to a decade earlier, say the 73 Schmidt rookie card.

So I don't think those rookies ever have a chance to be worth more than $1,000 in PSA 10 in the future just because of the non-scarcity factor.

Having said that, I don't think either PSA 9's or 10's have much room to grow in value for 80's rookie cards.

LOL it wouldn't be this kind of thread without that comment!

I don't invest in cards :-) I'm just interested in people's opinions and would like to make the best financial decisions with cardboard that I can (in as far as that's possible).

There are tons of great 80's rookies ... if you look beyond baseball. Plenty of worthwhile investments in hockey, basketball, football, boxing, soccer, etc. from the 80's cards.
  • Doog71 I hear ya....... I like you style. As far as the notion that cards like the 82 topps Ripken for example doesn't have much upside I beg to differ..... Have you look at the relatively low pop of the topps 10's for his regular topps card?
  • If vintage Ed likes your style...red alert
  • But seriously buy stocks. Squishing investment into the equation robs the soul

If you're in it just for collecting purposes , go with a blazer of a PSA 9 83T Tony Gwynn. There are tons of 9's that look just as good as a 10. Investment wise, I don't see a lot of potential in 80's baseball. As others have mentioned, way too much of it out there continuing to be graded and pop report always increasing.

"roid era guys"...that's funny. Is that the new name for the "buying group". Love it.
    Collecting PSA 9's from 1970-1977. Raw 9's from 72-77. Raw 10's from '78-'83.
Collecting Unopened from '72-'83; mostly BBCE certified boxes/cases/racks.
    Prefer to buy in bulk.

I think there is some great potential for 80's O-Pee-Chee Hockey RC's. Just look at how many HOF's from that decade are still under $50 in PSA 9: Ciccarelli, Fuhr, Hawerchuk, Ron Francis, Scott Stevens, Lafontaine, Gilmour, Neely, Shannahan, Brett Hull and I'm sure a bunch more. Granted, these are not the marquee players like Lemieux, Messier, Bourque and Yzerman. But they are all HOF's none the less, and the population of these RC's is much lower than with other sports.
