Surprised at Mattingly drop

I haven't been buying PSA cards for a little over a year.

I was surprised to see (at least to my recollection) the drop in Mattingly RCs, especially the Donruss.

PSA 9 Donruss $50
PSA 9 Fleer $18
PSA 9 Topps $13

Is this just because there are so many? Or is his popularity waning?

He spent a handful of years being close to managing in a World Series. Now, not so much.

I would think his popularity is more influenced by his playing days :-)

I think it's a population issue at those grade levels. The 1986 Tiffany 10 for example just sold for a big amount, and the 84 Tiffany 10 has been pretty consistent.

I agree with you. His popularity has consistently been well documented. However, the value of his rookie cards elevated to more significant levels while he managed the Dodgers. It's my personal belief that his value increased based on potential. Not popularity.

Of course, the marketplace being what it is, only a small tremor could predicate another resurgent wave of demand.

I'm not an expert at the BB HOF rules, is Mattingly completely eliminated from getting in? Or can the Veteran's committee vote him in? I don't see him making it in as a manager anytime soon.

He's no longer eligible in the standard voting.

All we need are 10-30 buyers to skyrocket the prices

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

I don't see his popularity waning much, certainly not among his core fans. He's got a shot with the vets(though those rules change almost yearly LOL), but I would put his hall chances at less than 10%. He's going to need some Torre type stuff on the managing side to get in IMO, and that's coming from someone who was a hardcore Mattingly collector from 86-00. Nobody saw Torre getting in as a manager in 1995 when hired by George either, and someone would have been laughed out of a conversation if the argument was presented back then so, never rule it out image
  • agree he is going to need a solid Torre type run to make the HOF - but he's still a young manager and probably got a tour with the Mets as skip then another NL team before helming the Yanks in 2019 and taking the baby boomers on a 5-7 year dynasty run.
