Dorothy I. Paschal

raysrays Posts: 2,424 ✭✭✭✭✭
Back in the early '90's I used to run across coin people at shows who had personally known famous large cent authorities.

I have never heard anything about Dorothy L. Paschal, co-author of the (1958) revision of Penny Whimsy with William Sheldon, MD and Walter Breen.

Did anyone here ever meet her, I wonder what was her story...

I came upon an elderly lady dealer in a high rise Philadelphia building who sold large cents around the late 1990's. Not sure if thats her or not.

That was likely Catherine Bullowa (of Coinhunters fame), whom I believe is still alive at age 96.

Nope, the closest I've come was listening to Ed Hipps at shows, who dealt in large cents with most of the old authorities, including
Dorothy, back in 50's and 60's.
You certainly run across her name in auction catalog provenance listings, but apparently she wasn't as
'colorful' a character as some of the others.

I found this on Al Boka's 1794 Cent website:

Paschal, Dorothy I. – (1905-1981) Charter member #77 of EAC. Paschal was born in New York City and was employed as a biological researcher at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. She was more familiarly know as "Doctor Dorothy" and was a woman of great charm with exquisite taste. Quite in keeping with her aristocratic bearing, she was a direct descendant of Chief Justice John Jay. Indeed, she was the last member of the family to occupy the Jay estate in Bedford, New York before it was given to the State Historical Society in 1953. She became a serious collector after meeting Dr. Sheldon. Paschel assembled one of the finest collections of large cents. She was the third person, ever, to assemble a complete collection the numbered Sheldon varieties. “Dr. Dorothy” valued appearance and beauty over all other characteristics. She collaborated with Sheldon on the publication of Penny Whimsy. Her collection was sold, over time, by Ray Chatham. An excellent obituary can be found in the Sept. 1981 issue of Penny Wise.

Dr. Sheldon, in addition to his numismatic achievements, created the field of somatotype and constitutional psychology that tried to correlate body types with behavior, intelligence and social hierarchy illustrated by his Ivy League nude posture photos. However, his work is generally dismissed by modern researchers.

Al Boka's cents are being sold by Heritage Sept. 8 in Long Beach. It will be an interesting test of the EAC market, as many of his 1794's are in the Condition Census.
