Greetings,
Just signed up to the forum a few days ago but I've been lurking the past few months. Since most of you that are active here have been around for a bit I figured I'd take a minute to introduce my self.
My name is Kevin and my screen name is LOTSOS which stands for Legends Of The Seven One Six. For those of you who aren't fimiliar with the 716 area code its for Buffalo, NY. I'm a Hockey guy with a capital H who's only been collecting the last few months. My family and I moved to the Phoenix area 2 years ago. I was a long time season ticket holder for the Sabres and still watch every game and that's actually what turned me onto collecting. After getting clearance to construct a man cave I decided to go with a hockey themed media room to watch games in all winter long. "Construction" is slated to begin this fall after I finish the items currently on my honey do list.
As a child of the 70s & 80s the first hockey cards I've ever got were 1982 OPC so I have a box of well loved cardboard from the early 80s to the early 90s. I didn't buy a card from 1990 until this past spring. I decided to focus my card collecting on the Sabres and if your going to do that you need to start with the greatest Sabre to ever lace them up and also the first player to ever put on the blue, gold and white - Gilbert Perreault. Obviously a lot has changed in the hobby from my first cards in the 80s to now and I decided that what ever I collect I will display. This decision led me toward graded cards and that decision led me to the world of the set registry and this message board.
I'm currently working on both the Perreault basic and master set registries. Here are links to them both:
Basic
Master
My holy grail would be THE PSA 10 1970 OPC Perreault rookie (good luck I know).
After completing these two sets the plan is to move onto the rest of the French Connection and then work my way from 1970 to present on team collections. Well that's the plan anyway. We'll see if I get side tracked along the way, just like a Jack Eichel rookie chase did this last month or so.
Well that's about it. I hope I didn't bore to many of you to sleep with my long winded introduction.

Edited to add: You HAVE to get at least one graded Jim Watson for your collection.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
Nice writeup and welcome!
You'll fit in really nice here. As Doug said we do have some hockey here.
I like the fact that you already have a "focus" which is my first rule of collecting.
And since you have some really nice goals - a "budget" is rule 2 and never break #1 or 2!
Don't be a stranger.
Looking forward to seeing pics of your man cave when finished.
to the CU. Thanks for sharing your interest and some background about yourself.
Good luck with your Perreault collection or whatever you decide to collect. Most importantly have fun with it and collect what makes you happy.

Welcome aboard.
"Molon Labe"
Wow, Buffalo to Phoenix - that's quite a change! I was born in Jamestown NY so have been to Buffalo a few times, but never became a hockey fan til we moved to LA. Welcome!
Just think - to go potentially from -30 to 100+?
I was stationed at Ft Drum NY - I'd say about 70 miles north of Syracuse. At Christmas time it was 40 below one evening.
Now that's cold!
Ya gotta love a guy who gave us Buffalo Wings!
Thanks,
David (LD_Ferg)
1985 Topps Football (starting in psa 8) - #9 - started 05/21/06
Welcome Kevin. There are a few guys on this board who love to collect hockey. Hopefully you can both learn and share your knowledge about the sport you love to collect. Stay active and enjoy the Board.
Edited to add: You HAVE to get at least one graded Jim Watson for your collection.
Yes, but the most passionate hockey collector got bammed for something stupid.

His 1970 OPC cracks me up every time I look at it. Most of the others are your classic bent over at the waist with two hands on the stick or a portrait style shot just from the waist up. In his he's standing straight up one hand on his stick and the way it's framed he looks like massive like Paul Bunyan but he's only listed at 6'.
Welcome. Don't forget to add a Taro Tsujimoto card to your collection. I believe there is only one, 2011 Score.
That's a great pull. I love that story, it just show that fun side of sports figures personalities that gets hidden now a days. Could you imagine Tim Murry walking up to the podium today and dead panning the selection like Punch Imlach!
Welcome!! What no love for Pat Lafontaine??
Plenty of love for Patty La la la LaFontaine. I grabbed 10s of his rookies as some of the first cards when I was still figuring out a game plan. Always wished his career ended differently. He deserved better. I was happy to see him rejoin the organization a few years ago but unfortunately it didn't last.
Thanks gain for the welcomes. While my hockey knowledge is pretty broad my card knowledge isn't so please be patient with me cause I'm sure I'll ask a few doozies.
Kevin
Just wanted to add this Kevin - where you started.
I went to your registry - you're making great progress.
Just curious.
Plan to put scans to your set?
I like looking at the cards personally. Not sure how others feel?
Again - a beauty of a card buddy.
Thanks,
Kevin

Ok. I poured myself a glass of whiskey and scanned in a few cards to post here. I'll have to work to catch up on getting everything that's in my registry scanned in and be better about putting the scans in as I add in the future.. ( also since I poured it pretty stiff so if I run on a little about why I like these particular cards I'll apologize in advance to those that are just here for the pics.)
Ok up first. A man who needs no introduction. Mr. Sabre himself Gillbert Perreault. The OPC was the first graded card I've ever purchased. I have a 8.5 (OC in the usual northern skew) enroute. I'm always looking to 10 out his rookies but with each being a Pop 1 that's a long shot. At first I hated that thought, that I wouldn't be able to 10 out my franchises true Icon but then I realized that it might be the one thing that keeps me always looking.
Second in this scan is the man that at the end of his career I hope I can say is the one Sabre who could possibly challenge Perrualt as the most Iconic player in the franchise's history. I'll ask this question officially in its own post later but man is collecting new cards complicated. UD alone has what seems to be 50 different lines of product. Again I'll ask later...........

Anyway. The 71's are a gourgous set. Here are a few of my favorites. First on top is the 8 that's being replaced by the 9 from the last Memory Lane auction. In my opinion his third best card after his rookie and the regular '71 (which as I said earlier is just a beautiful year IMO).
Second Richard Martins RC in PSA 10. Again I love the French Connection and for me he was the man that could really take that line to the next level.
Third Larry Hillman. I love this card because like I said with the Jim Watson earlier it's just a beaut! If your going to paste a head onto another players body at least make sure that you don't use a goalies body. Also I love how photo shop circa 1971 can't change the sweater number.

Here they are for the first time ever. The. French. Connection. Unfortunately for me it happened in 1972.
Dimes in Topps. Still working on OPC. I love the story behind why OPCs are always in worse shape and harder to find. But damn it makes it frustrating.
Also In this scan is the 1976 French Connection Card. I. Love. This. Card. (I know that's a lot of periods in this post but the whiskey is starting to kick in). I'm still chasing a quality OPC version.

A few odd ones.
First, Slum22 you asked about Patty La La..... Here is his OPC RC in PSA 10. Again I love him but I can't consider him the greatest in franchise history since he didn't start his career nor finish it here. I use this argument often with friends but he's in the same catagorie as arguably the greatest goalie in NHL history (see Hasek, Dominick) unfortunately still not the greatest Sabre of all time.
Second, Jim Schoenfield's OPC rookie in PSA 9. This one is a cool one for me. First just about the card itself. This is his rookie card. HIS ROOKIE CARD. He is Assistant Captain! How many Rookies after just being drafted are given a letter. I was his oldest sons roommate in college. That's not a brag because he was considered a douche by a few of us. But after a while he grew on you like the clap. Hi JAS. Anyway this card reminds me of a great time in my life. After I finished playing in college (uneventfully I may add) I was really disenchanted with the game. Stumbling through life I was invited to skate in the weekly Sabres Alumni skate. BEST TIME OF MY LIFE. And that was just in the locker room and at the bar after. The skate was awesome. I could tell a million stories. Let me just say that I will never look at Rick Dudley's cards again and not laugh audibly.
Third is the 1977 Gilbert Perreault Glossy Insert Square Corner. I'm not sure why but the '76 and '77 glossy inserts are cool to me. I have a bunch of raw cards that I need to go through and submit to fill out a nice set.

1951 Parkie The Winning Goal
This one was a sentimental purchase. I am a huge Tragically Hip fan. HUGE! Now I'm sure that most of you have absolutely no idea who they are but to Canadians ((no I'm not Canadian) Not that there's anything wrong with that) and US hockey guys of my vintage they are LEGENDS.
Their lead singer Gord Downie was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer back in May. They just completed what will most likely be their last concert. I've seen them in concert over a dozen times, the last was this past fall in Vegas. So to those of you who know the story no need to read any further. To those of you who don't here is the cliff note version:
The card has Bill Barilko scoring the game winning Stanley Cup clinching goal for the Toronto Maple Leafs ( blow leafs, blow!). That goal would be the last of his career. That off season he died in a plane crash in very remote part of Canada. They didn't find any trace of his plane until 1962. That year they found his plane and his remains. Oh and the Leafs also won the Stanley Cup for the first time since Barilko's goal......... and the last since.
The story is detailed in The Tragically Hips song "50 Mission Cap". Give them a listen if you've never heard of them.
Anywhoooo. That's all for me tonight. Good night to all.
(Sorry the scan is out of focus but the card is not. It's just to late for me to mess with the scanner anymore tonight.)

But simply because of the cards, I wish I did. The print runs and other regional factors make collecting them so much more of a challenge than the other sports.
Feel free to speak up and share!
Don't waste your time and fees listing on ebay before getting in touch me by PM or at gregmo32@aol.com !
I'm guessing a 70 OPC in 9 is way more than the Topps?
Very nice display of cards.
The "winning goal" card is interesting - great action shot and the goalie? No head gear? Wow!

Nice LaFontaine. Love it.
The back of the card is interesting as it talks about the rumored trade of Jacques Lemaire from Buffalo to Montreal. He of course was pictured on a card in a Sabres uniform despite never being traded there.

I'm clueless on hockey Kevin.

Very nice display of cards.
The "winning goal" card is interesting - great action shot and the goalie? No head gear? Wow!
Yes it is. How much, I have know idea. Again I've only been at this a short time but from what I've read the 1970 OPC Perreault is one of the most difficult to find in high grade condition. Apparently it had to do with its location on the sheet which subjected it to additional wear before even getting into a pack. It's one of the things that makes the card so neat to me. Again since this spring I couldn't find anything on eBay or any auction site in higher than 6. There is an 8 OC that I picked up recently, not realizing that it has the same value as the 6 for set registry purposes until I entered it today. DOAH! Rookie mistake. Still a cool card and since I have 5 kids, including 2 sons, I'll just set it aside in case one or both of them ever gets the bug. So, sorry but I can't enlighten you any more than that on the price difference. I have spoken to one individual who's opinion I value and the numbers he tossed around if the 9s or 10s ever got listed blew my mind. I think the 10 last sold in 2007 for right around $2k.
The winning goal is a cool card. Goalies back then, and still even today but not in quite the same way, were NUTS! They had guys like Bobby Hull flying down the ice and intentionally firing their first shot of the game at head level. Next shot? Right along the ice. Goalies of that era where crazy *****s. I
like that Parkie set a lot. But as you advised earlier, have a plan and stick to it. Otherwise I could get side tracked into that one set for a loooooong time.
My favorite Sabres card
The back of the card is interesting as it talks about the rumored trade of Jacques Lemaire from Buffalo to Montreal. He of course was pictured on a card in a Sabres uniform despite never being traded there.

I'm going to have to keep an eye out for one of these. Thanks for explaining the reason for the Lemaire card. I just assumed he had a cup of coffee with the Sabres and that was it. Thats cool. It adds a whole different twist to those two cards. Thanks for sharing that. Also I love his bucket in the photo.
Wow dude, great cards, great history lesson. I'm definitely looking forward to more posts from you. In the meantime, I might die from laughing at the 71 Hillman!
Yeah Dan that's a classic for me. Here are the two of them together for those that don't know.
