Bizarre way to spend $4500 in grading fees

718 1981 Topps Just Graded

I'm not sure what to think here. I can see missing on some cards and getting 7's and 8's, but the miscut ones are strange.

"I'm a 100% disabled U.S. Military Veteran and I'm parting with this collection to help with some medical expenses I have incurred. I really don't want to sell but I'm forced too." Always a Red Flag. Also, the "I'm selling my ex-husband's cards"....

Not sure if that is real or not either ... but if you look at his feedback he made a decent amount of purchases from PWCC in the past six months. Don't know what they were .... but why are you buying if you need the money that bad? (Yes, I know ... there is a slight possibility that the medical expenses were incurred between the time he bought from PWCC and the time he listed this lot.)
    STAY HEALTHY!

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

Haven't we seen this lot listed before? I remember a thread about it several weeks back.

Also, these cards were all recently graded so the story seems rather incredulous.

He listed it as a BIN on 8/10 for $25,000, and then 5 days later for $7,180.
  • That whole disabled vet thing is just a bull crap con. I'm a 90% disabled marine corps vet that retired after 21 years the government pays me 4,400 a month. If he's 100% he'd be getting over 5 grand and his medical bills wouldn't be an issue. The VA would take care of him. Sooooooooooooo bullcrap! I'd say nice try but I know plenty of real 100% vets and getting 100% from the VA you gotta be messed up so I'm tempted to write him and call him out on it.

Did anyone check any of the skipped certs to see if he may have hit a 10 on anything?

    Thanks,

A few more thoughts on the lot:

    - I did not examine the certs closely enough to see if it is a straight run through or if there may have actually been some potentially decent ones in the sub that are not present in the lot, but I do wonder if there were

    - Lot says all 1981 Topps but there are a lot of 1981 Donruss Younts

    - Pretty much all HOF but interesting to see Jack Morris in the lot considering the rest of the bunch

    - Several of the more notable/collectible cards from the 1981 Topps set aren't in there, which is a little odd considering what is there, but most blatant is the lack of Ryans. Also, no Fernando, Raines, Gibson, just to name a few

There is no good answer for why someone would sub most of the items that were subbed in that order beyond a plain old lack of understanding of the concept. But yes, to agree with the OP, those grading fees were a perfectly avoidable and ridiculous waste of money.

I could almost swear that this same lot was offered by pwcc a few months back. I remember it because of the shear number of dupes in mid to low grade. I'm thinking he bought it from PWCC and thought he could turn a profit...obviously his thinking was amiss.

You may be right, as I also swore I've seen this lot before . . .

It's like deja vu all over.

Man, the seller took a bath on this lot. Lessons learned for sure with a loss of 2k+.

Yes anytime my wife ever wanted to sell something on Craig's List or whatnot, I'd have to remind her (sometimes she does ask) NOT to put that we are both disabled or whatever. It's the same as a job seeker answering the "what's your main weakness" question with something like "overachiever", "works too hard", or whatnot. In both cases the other person will (inwardly at least) roll their eyes and be all like "ha! Oldest trick in the book... image "

Very strange, I mean how many cards actually have a value in this lot? There were some 9's but otherwise, I would wonder why the buyer would pay $3 a piece for them? I thought I would try and put 400 in, figuring 50 cents, why not, at least it would look cool, but that got blown away, then said, okay let's see what 500 does and that didn't work either. If you had a big showcase to display, then I could see this as "filler" but otherwise, unless I'm missing something, I can't see the reason to pay over $2k for the lot.

I tried it with a lot of 200 GAI 9 (and a bunch with the 1st graded tag) 1978 Topps cards and I got them for around $200, figuring a buck a piece, how can I lose, there has to be something there, well, I still have about 180 of those puppies, couldn't even sell for $4 with free shipping! But it's a cool looking stack of slabs image

    Probably shilled.... Back up;

    Text
  • Went back to check PWCC sales and yes, these were broke into small lots sold by PWCC in April.

I was able to account for 699 of the cards coming from PWCC (and he used their scans as well, so it was easy)

He paid only $814 for 699 (of the 718 listed) of the cards.

If I were him, I would have taken the $2179 and run... So yea, the bidding was obviously shilled. I wonder if it was a tactical move to put a "value" on it, or if he was actually unhappy with the final hammer price.

What an awesome, trustworthy seller image. I just submitted a best offer of $300 just to see what he would do and mentioned that I hope he goes after the person who didn't pay the final price last night image

Since he started his "sale" at $25k, then $7k, now $5k, maybe he will figure it out at some point..

Definitely shilled, but this guy isn't all there? Pays for all them at worse case $1k, sell for over $2k in a short period, I would take that money

    From the seller:

The highest bidder backed out. He messaged me about 2 minutes right after it ended last night and he wanted to cancel his bid.

Well, if you bought them and immediately sent them to COMC, and paid them $1 per card to inprocess them, you could list them on their site for $5 each and just let them sell whenever they sell.
That's why I bid $525. No problem when I woke up and saw that I didn't win.

Good point, just not sure if the $700 investment plus the purchase price (and dang, hate to ship that package!) is worth it to try and sell some totally awesome PSA 5's of Pete Rose. Then again, I tried to sell GAI 9's of 1978 Topps for $4 shipped and had no luck on them either image Now some of those 8's and 9', there's some potential, just a long term investment..I think it would be cool just to have the pile in front of me!...That's how I look at my GAI bulk purchase investment..they look neat in a big stack!
