Interesting Article claims Ty Cobb might not have been racist / dirty / murderer

I read this and found it very interesting - would be a shame if, after all these years, he was not what many reported about him!

I have no personal knowledge of Cobb's character, but my wife's grandfather and he were close friends for the reasons discussed in her grandfather's obit below. Her grandfather wanted to name her dad Tyrus, but her grandmother did not like Cobb at all and vetoed that.

Cobb, and several other baseball greats, are listed as honorary pallbearers below

Thanks for sharing the story. It is a real eye-opener for me as I am as guilty as the next person for believing the stories I have heard about him. It would be a real shame if most of what we know of him has been fabricated.
I spend a good deal of time doing genealogy work. Obituaries are almost always a great source of information. This one is about as good as they get. I knew Cobb used a heavy bat but I can't even imagine swinging a 44 ounce one.
Cool that Mr Morrow witnessed the Ruth called shot.
Bishop, I've got to ask- Do you know where the letter from Cobb to your wife's grandfather is now?

Thanks for this. May be hard for history to be corrected as the allure of the untruths is what makes for better sensationalistic newspaper/book fodder.

I read he donated close to $3 million to set up a hospital and scholarship fund for whole community.

History is generally constructed by embellishment. It was particularly effective prior to the invent of modern media and the information age as there was little to no way to challenge incorrect beliefs. Now we live in the age of misinformation where you never know what to believe and what not to believe unless you do your due diligence. There is a spin on everything in order to create a level of confusion. The vast majority of society are not capable of performing their own due diligence even with such powerful informational tools like the internet thus just like the past we live believing in our own ignorance.

Thankfully there are a few people who dig deep and search for truth.
