1904 Straits Settlement trade dollar

I'd never seen one of these before. Similar design to the British trade dollars of the same era. Strange little pellet in the "4" of the date...

These are great coins. Can be tough to find nice pieces in higher grades.

The 1901 Straits dollar was the bête noire of my daughter and I's old 1901 Victorian type set. I never managed to get one.

They are indeed great coins, so it's small wonder they're a favorite target of the Chinese counterfeiters.

Yep. I've always liked this design, too. I like the symmetry of the flower, and how it resembles some kind of seal, exuding the imperial quality which comes with coins from world powers like UK.

I have a raw one, which like most of my raw coins, is not yet photographed. One of these days I'll do like Cathy and set up an iPhone rig. First I need to get a new iPhone, as the lens on mine has a nice crack right down the middle!
