SB Ancient/World Session I

First, I want to give a shout out to Stacks-Bowers on their new iPhone/iPad app. It was wonderful, generally better than their web site but for one noticeable detail: the web site will tell you if the "bid" met the reserve. Otherwise, I truly and thoroughly love the app. (I used it over wifi from home on both my iPhone and iPad in full video mode.)

Caveat: I didn't actually place a bid this time (my lot of primary interest flew out of my comfort zone before I could bid), so I wasn't able to assess its most important aspect.

Second, every lot that I watched seemed to have done quite well. The lot of primary interest was the Alfred Londonia penny, which had an estimate of $7k to $10k. A friend viewed it in hand and said that despite the label (tooled) and the crack, it was a nice piece. The lot hammered at $9.5k, which made it "full value" for a coin that is "nice but impaired". The Stewartby coin, graded GVF (British standards), a rarer sub-variety with moneyer signature, and was very nice and problem-free, I think fetched ~ $14k (IIRC).

Oh well.

On a positive note, I have information that one of ours won a premium piece today. I will let that person post it (likely soon) if he/she chooses. Congrats to that person on the win. (I think you'll all agree once you get the details.)

    Hammered at £9,000 (pre-Brexit!!!).

Edited to add: same type, not the rarer moneyer-signed sub-variety.

How has Brexit and pound devaluation impacted the valuations when buying in the UK?

Now is a good time for Americans to buy from Europe due to the exchange rate.

I've also seen CNG consignments of British material not looking robust of late, but I have no idea if this is related to the exchange rate. There are other USA dealers of British material too, but they don't provide suitable data for comparison.

Too bad I already took my big Europe vacation to London and Paris in September '15. Maybe the exchange rate will still be good when I am able to go again.

The exchange rate is quite favorable, but it's not all from Brexit; the pound has been falling steadily for about 2 years

EVP and I have discussed the merits of this particular Alfred Londonia coins in private correspondence, but I will share my opinion that the SB coin was not a standout piece due to the damage on the reverse. The overall look was pleasing, but the damage keeps it from being a $15000+ coin. London coins of Alfred the Great are historically important, and rare, but the rarity is eclipsed by the demand. Even someone with no interest in British Anglo-Saxon coins can appreciate a coin of a famous monarch, commemorating the retaking of a famous city. Many of these coins are poorly struck, of inferior metal that frequently delaminates, some are damaged, and all have been cleaned, so when evaluating these, one must consider the coin in total and accept that there will be some detractions.
