My Delayed Thursday National Review (updated with rip pictures)

Hi, Here’s my delayed National Recap – I only had about 4 hours on Thursday and that included 30 minutes spent getting Darryl Strawberry’s auto (more below), but it was definitely a bit rush and hectic. I had a hard time for a while getting a handle on the room, so after looking through everyone’s photos, I definitely missed some key booths unfortunately.

My thoughts and purchases:
- Everyone keeps mentioning the unopened from BBCE (as always), but this year their booth was about the autos including the signed fleer bkball sets (which were incredible), and they also had the most on card MJ signed autos I’ve ever seen. They probably had 30 signed MJ cards from 86 Fleer through about 91 Upper Deck. Heard the story was that a local Chicago pastor (I think?) collected them all during that time period. All are Jordan’s older playing signature. Considering what people pay for the newer sticker autos, I thought they were priced very reasonably and it was my one bigger spur of the moment purchaser. I picked up the 88 Fleer All Star card. This was an iconic card from my childhood because it showed “the dunk” on a card?!? It sits in a nice red label psa 8 and I don’t think any others are on psa/dna. Considering what people are paying for Jordan cards, I think these signed ones were a steal

- I was keeping my eyes out for 61 Fleer Jerry West rookies in an 8, saw 2. But couldn’t pull the trigger on uncentered copies that are still at like 75% above prices of 4 mos ago.

- I was also poking around for Babe Ruth Goudey 144s, but totally missed the tables with a bunch of them.

- Argh! The internet and lack of phone connection was really tough. I learned that one of the cooler parts of the National is stumbling upon something not in your main collecting group, however, I could barely get VCP to work and with what’s been going on with prices don’t trust most dealers to be even “market price” anymore.

- So Strawberry was my favorite player as a kid. I know he’s a regular on the circuit, but just happened to notice two weeks ago that he was there the one day I was going. So when I got up to him, I let him know that I was mad at him for a while as a kid b/c in 1993 I invited him to my bar mitzvah (the fancy envelope with his name calligrophied and all!) and he never showed up! He chuckled and said something about how he should have been still playing in NY instead of LA then!

- Does anyone else find the piles of “deceased” player autos kinda creepy? I got it if you’re collecting a set and you need one, but to be picking up random autos of guys from the mid 80s who are deceased kinda weirds me out.

- Cash is definitely king!

- So my purchases – For ripping I picked up a show special 84T box from BBCE, a prizm soccer box, two junky 2006/7 football boxes, and 2 packs of 78 bkball, and 1 81 bkball. Ripped those three packs and the 81 yielded a nice Magic base card

- Got the 88 Fleer MJ card, a pretty solid psa 8 Walter Payton Rookie, a SGC 7.5 Dr. J rookie,a couple psa 8 61 fleers for a set I’m slowly working, and an oddball Abraham Lincoln playing card from 1902.

- I was on the way and looked at one final table, and ending up leaving with a 53 Satchell Paige. I’ve always seen this as such an iconic card. Only a couple cards of Paige, and this image just feels like an historical throwback to the past. It was a solid 5.5 with nice centering, and I had literally no idea what a decent price was. I might have overpaid slightly, but felt happy adding this classic card to my collection.

Some good lessons for me on how to maneuver through such a large show, but I had a great time and hope I can swing a trip again next year!

Holy Crap ... you did all that in less than 4 hours? Great job. Cards are real nice. Enjoy those additions to your PC.
    STAY HEALTHY!

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

I agree, very nice haul. I love the Satch. Still have the one I got in 1985. Ended up grading out at a 4.

LOL, yep, I was hustling around a bit which is why I think I missed some stuff...to BBCE...buy a strawberry ticket...check out psa lines (decide they were too long to deal with)...scurry around...to Darryl...back to BBCE to buy Jordan... etc

oh and i also was really considering buying the 74 factory set from BBCE, just b/c it was so cool looking and if you decided to open it, you'd getting a lot of cards for possible submission. was second guessing myself on the way home for not buying it, so I'm glad to read in the other thread that the cards may not have been the best.

I don't remember the details, was it factory hand collated or machine collated?

Wow - very nice Dr J and those 61Fs look super!

Looks like you picked up some nice stuff in a short time.

When you mentioned "fair" price for Jordan autos? What was the range of asking prices?

    Thanx for sharing.

Question for Jordan auto collectors. I purchased a signed Jordan 8 x 10 at the Chicago National in 1993. Black sharpie, big bold signature. $35, which was about 1/3rd of my budget for the show back then. image

How much would PSA/DNA charge to authenticate, what is their refund policy if its rejected, and what would an authenticated 8 x 10, signed around 1991-92 go for?

    Thanks in advance.
Kiss me once, shame on you.

"When you mentioned "fair" price for Jordan autos? What was the range of asking prices? "

started at 750 I believe for more common stuff like 91 hoops upper deck, etc and then gradually up from there with each year up a few hundred dollars and then to a big spike to the 86 fleer

No refunds if they reject it. They did the work.

So I ripped all of the boxes and packs I bought at the national. Again these were all pretty low value items, so don't expect anything crazy but definitely a fun and positive experience!

First up is the 84 topps box, bought from BBCE for the $65 show special. Centering was all over in the box, and some rough corners, but mostly dodged those bullets by landing these guys! Can you imagine the excitement of opening this box in 89? Mattinglys and Straw will go with the next batch submission to PSA

    image

next opened the 3 topps bkball packs, and landed a decent magic 2nd year card

    image

Finally, I opened the hodge podge of two football boxes, and a recent prizm soccer box. In football, I got a boatload of autos of guys who aren't in the league anymore, or never were! but did land a nice AP rookie patch. and then in the soccer box, my auto was of Sergio ramos who considering I have heard of (captain of Real Madrid and the Spanish National team), i'll consider it a success!!

Thanks for the great show recap and nice rip! Did you chew that 1984 gum? I bought a bunch of show special wax boxes from BBCE in AC, and waiting for the perfect moment to tear into them!
    Go Dodgers!

lol no gum chewing! some of it looked "normal" and some of it really stained the cards with some weird chemical icky goo
