1975 regular size wax baseball wax packs--where are they?

I dont see even a single pack for sale on Ebay or even a sale of one in the past few months on Ebay, let alone a full box. I do see cellos and racks.

Did BBCE have some regular wax at the National? Did anyone see any packs or boxes for sale elsewhere at the National? Packs and boxes seem to be unusually hard to find recently.

BBCE had a full box of regular-sized 75 wax at the National. I believe it was sold for about 11K.

Your search must be missing them somehow. There are some on ebay, and there are recent sales of them too. Not many, but they're there.

The raw packs are virtually all resealed. Authentic graded ones come up very few and far between.

This is a box of cards I would love to have. I just wanted to see the box at the national. By the time I got there on Saturday it was sold image

  • 75' Topps Baseball Wax are very popular and been hard to come by for some time! I actually had one for sale a while back that I bought from Steve! Wax & Racks are hard to come by....legit anyways!

Steve's box sold either Tuesday or early Wednesday. They typically don't last long once they go up for sale.

I wish I still had the full box I purchased about 15 years ago. It still had the pixie stix advertisement in it. I only saved one pack which had the #5 Nolan Ryan Highlight card showing on the back.

Graded 75 regular packs rarely come up for sale. I think Tim had one on EBAY a few months ago that was a PSA7 if I'm not mistaken, and it sold very quickly.

There was a board member that was selling his graded pack collection on the b/s/t. In the collection was a 1975 psa pack (I can't remember the grade; maybe a 7). I had PM'ed him about it 5 minutes after he posted it to b/s/t. I was already FOURTH in line.

Bought this badboy wax tray at the National...

    image

Took it to Steve to check out. He said he couldn't really authenticate it with the wrapper. So because I'm me, I said "let's unwrap the thing!"

He inspected it and asked "Do you want the good news or the bad news?" I cringed. He said "The good news is there's no bad news. The packs are clean as can be."

Now, in retrospect, unless I get lucky on some low pops, what I really should have done was get each pack slabbed. But then again, I'm me! And the gum was loose anyhow.

  • Not sure how many people would be interested in a $300 + pack but just maybe if Steve gets his hands on one again, that could be a box break? Every time you see a pack let alone a box when you'll see another one any time soon!
  • Nice pickup Nikklos! That loose gum is a killer and the more that pack is handled, the more chances of that gum cutting the wrapper! Sucks to have that after getting it graded!

    Chris,

Awesome pickup!! I can't recall the last time I saw a 75 tray for sale, but then again, I can't remember seeing a regular pack either? Will these be ripped??!! image

I ripped those packs with the quickness! No star power really but some low pops that are worth a shot. A really nice Bob Moose, for example, which seems to be a toughie. Really sharp card!

Chris, do you have a pic of the back of that 75 tray?

I have a few of those salted away. Wasn't that long ago they were $500 each, lol..

Chris - you're just a little nuts with big nuts and I love it. Sorry you didn't hit a score. That tray was pretty nice. I don't think I could've done it. I scooped a pair of raw 75s from Steve at last years Nat for 135 each, but when it was ripping time, I ripped the far more plentiful cello. Thanks for sharing.

You know, I look at the picture, and yes that tray is a beauty. BUT there is a big problem. No one could truly know for sure if it was authentic as long as it was in the tray. Not even the expert of experts himself. So there would always be a cloud hanging over it.

I took a gamble on it because it just felt right.

Tim - I kept the tray itself and will make a point to post a pic. But if I recall, I think it was an advertisement for something like Topps Sports News.

I will also make a point to post some pics of the better cards.

VintageFun -75 cello has much more bang for the buck but I will say this - the corners seem a lot sharper on these cards out of the wax than stuff I've pulled from the tight '75 cellos.

Agree these are disappearing. All 1975 (regular size) have been tough to get. This was the year I collected growing up. Two years ago, racks disappeared as well. 5-10 years ago, you could sort thru piles of racks for $150-$175/per.
  • grote15grote15 Posts: 29,728 ✭✭✭✭✭
Thanks, Chris! The reason I ask is that Topps used a different cardboard tray backing for trays through 1976 after which they changed to the design seen most frequently from 1977 forward.

BBCE sells wax trays that they put in a the sealed "rack pack holder" hard sleeves so I am not sure I understand why Steve said they couldnt authenticate the 75 wax tray without breaking it open and looking at the individual packs? Did I understand that correctly?
  • NikklosNikklos Posts: 1,411 ✭✭✭
I think the 79s come from a sealed case so he knows.

Interesting to see the 75 mini prices come down a bit after spiking. One box just sold for $2100 on eBay. I am in the market for one and would love to get one under 2k

The auction was ended early. Possibly sold but I doubt it was at that listing price.

And 20 years ago, they were $80 to $100 per rack. The good old days.

Chris, glad to see you found something in your wheel house. Hope you hit on a couple of low pop cards.

The 1975 box Steve had at the show looked really nice. I think it sold on Wednesday. Harder to find wax and racks from that year due to the popularity of that set. Only reason cellos are out there is because of Fritsch.

Chris, I should have guessed it was you. Lol

I have been looking for a 1975 wax tray for someone for nearly 2 years. They are impossible to find. Steve told me that "someone" had bought one at the show and brought it to him to check out. He told me about the decision to pull out the packs so they could be checked individually.

I should have guessed who the lucky "culprit" was. image

Sorry we did not cross paths at the show. It would have been awesome to meet you in person.

    Tim,

I always like seeing your topps wax trays. I think you have a complete run from 75-80, but do you have any pre 1975 trays? Anybody else? Someone has shown their 1969 tray before, but cant recall who.
  • 19541954 Posts: 2,905 ✭✭✭
Indeed, the box sold on Wednesday around 10:45 because I saw the box sitting there along with a couple of other boxes I wanted. I came back and all three boxes had been purchased. The 1975 Topps box was extremely nice.

You know, Dave, I didn't think about it until afterward but were you the Dave in the green Under Armour shirt set up at the show with a sweet collection of unopened? If so, we did meet! We both spoke of our enjoyment of opening unopened!
