1980 Rickey Henderson PSA 9 -- Doubled In Past Few Months

I remember picking up this card just a few months ago for $360, and I was just recently looking at some closed auctions, and this card is now getting $700-$800 on a regular basis.

I guess I got in at the right time...

Anybody see any reasons for the big jump as of late?

I could never quite figure out the fluctuations of petroleum prices, either.

I'm not quite sure if you're being snarky or not, but I thought my inquiry was valid.

Jumping from $360 to near $800 is quite a jump in price, and I was seeking insight from the board as to why they think this card has escalated as it has.

    Jay,
There are probably 25-50 cards that have seen similar price jumps in the last six months. Conspiracy theorists have pointed to the "buying group", comprised of 10-30 investors, for the rapid, exponential rise.

Nope. Just a parallel in my view. Prices rise, but they don't back down, even if availability is prevalent.

Now, I could speculate that the value increase would have something to do with the buying group, but that's just silly.
  • It's escalated as people who have already bought it sometimes make sure the price stays above what they paid.

To me, it seems like one of those cards where the PSA 10 is in another stratosphere, so more people are 'settling' for the 9, knowing they can't get a 10. When the gap between a 9 and a 10 is approaching 100x, I think naturally there was room for the 9 to go up, which is what happened.
