And in South Bend, Today...

Today I attended my first coin and currency show, in South Bend, Indiana. It was a...modest affair, reminding me very much of a tiny Star Trek convention's dealer's room. Coins, of course, were the focus. Dealers looked board, others listened to visitors explain detailed histories of notes, or whatever conspiracy theory they were experts on (JFK, Vietnam, whatever).

The big "news" is nobody cares about "green seals." If it has green, they don't know about it, they don't want to hear about it. My overall impression was "how sad."

But the day was not lost. I went to Niles, Michigan, a whole 5 miles north, and fell upon three incredible antique stores (no currency, but wow lots of other stuff). In one of the cases was this cartoon $2 "note" with Nixon on it. I didn't get it but did take a picture. Thought I would post it for a laugh.

Mike, is that one of those dreaded Green Seals in the dealer's case?

That bison note is dynamite. Did you get a price on it?

    Ouch. So no bargain.
  • That is precisely the place where you can come across some really good deals. The only problem is you have to go quite a few of those disappointments before you find it.

That Nixon bill is very common - $5 max is all that's worth.

    +1

I look at these small shows along the lines of the old adage "you've got to kiss a lot of frogs to get a prince" (or princess I suppose). If there's nothing for me, then I figure it just brings me that much closer to my next good buy!

The small shows here in So. Cal are a waste of time for me. Same dealers, same stale inventory with nothing new. They all know how to price everything at a high level so I know there will never be any bargains. The bigger shows like Long Beach or Las Vegas are better as there tends to be more variation in the dealers, inventory and prices.

Stop by my table next time, I was there. Plenty of serious currency

I completely agree. I have quit going to the smaller shows here in Southern California as they're pretty much a waste of time. I still go to the San Diego Coinarama every July but only because I live fairly close by.

Yep exactly. I attended coinorama last year and it was a complete bust for paper money.
