My modest haul from the National in Atlantic City

I don't have a whole lot of hobby budget but I did have a great time at the show and picked up some stuff to enjoy.

The highlight for me is the 1953 Topps Satchel Paige. It's a card I always wanted and looks really nice for a 4. I am also an Aaron collector and 1962 was on my needs list. This card is sharp and must have been lowered to a 6 due to centering.

I'm also dabbling in 1952's now and picked up a group of EX or so raw cards and a PSA 5 Gil Hodges. Finally, the wax boxes came from BBCE. Couldn't pass them up at $45 for the 81 Fleer box and $65 for the '83. They were daily specials for Thursday.

Edited to add: The ketchup came from Five Guys.

Nice pickups. I have always liked the 83 Fleer especially the Ryne Sandberg.

    Daniel,

It was a pleasure finally meeting you on Thursday. I am really glad to see you were able to pick up some more 52's. They really look nice.

How many 71 Topps GM's did you see. I bet I saw 50 there. Barely saw 5 at the last 5 nationals.

    Hiya Daniel

    I think ya did good!

I would really like to have the Hodges card - I really like the orange background!

You picked up some nice looking 52s.

Are you going to open the 83F box? Some consider the design boring? I - personally - like it.

I was great to finally meet you Daniel. I'm, of course, partial to the wax boxes, but that 1953 Topps Satchel Paige looks really nice. Congrats!!

Don't tell anyone, but I enjoyed opening those 1981 Fleer packs looking for the Nettles error card back in the day.

I stopped ripping in 1988. I went cold turkey.

Lots of nice cards. I've been thinking of buying a 52 or two just because I don't own any yet. My fave of the bunch is the 53 Paige. Seems like you got a good deal on the boxes too. Congrats all around.

I would imagine the ketchup got an oc qualifier?

If you're going to get ketchup, get it from Flip-Daddy's. Much better.

...and nice cards, by the way. Congrats on your haul. image

Very nice pick ups. Huge fan of the '53 Satchell Paige.

Just to answer a few of the comments: I will keep the 83F box sealed and sell it down the road. I will most likely keep the Satchel Paige card in the SGC holder - I tend to have poor luck submitting cards to PSA. The ketchup is definitely off center.

I did have a blast at the show. Would like to go next year but my hobby budget definitely does not include flying to the midwest :-)

Sweet pick-ups, mate. I think that pose of Hank is really nice, and better than many of his cards.

I love the 52 Topps Gil Hodges. Everything is perfect with that card design, and I'm glad that Topps copied what Bowman was doing by offering a mixture of vertical and horizontal card formats. Can you imagine how cropping the Hodges photo for a vertical would have lessened its impact. The photo of course is made for a horizontal card, and with that dazzling salmon background that Mike also loves and commented on, it makes for a perfect card. You got a nice clean example.

A modest haul, true, but at least you got to go and came back home with some beauties! If I went, my haul would not have been as nice as yours. You did well. Thanks for sharing with us. ---Indiana Jones (Brian Powell)
