This is a monster even by Zohar standards.
Quite the manhole cover, too, apparently.
Wow. Truly amazing.

Do you think this shield design is what leads some of the fringe to thinking that there were visits from flying saucers? The 'hands' kind of look like an atmospheric disturbance with a high speed flight.
In the spirit of the Olympics...

Impressive medal! Thanks also for the description and interesting background information.
+a bunch. It must look amazing in hand.
I was curious about the connection between this medal and Portugal.
A Português was a large medieval Portuguese coin.
A Portugaloser was a coin issued in parts of Germany and other parts of Europe which had the same value as the Portuguese coin.
According to Frey's Dictionary of Numismatic Names (1917), these north European pieces were actually struck for presentation, not circulation.

I hadn't noticed the diameter until your comment. Good point, and explains the high level of detail on the smaller elements.
How advanced were the engraving / minting methods of this period, Zohar?

BTW - this is the gold version of the Portugaleser which I saw in hand. Spectacular!
GOLD
Quite advanced if you look at the 17-18th century Talers and the advent of the roller and screw presses.

I had not even noticed the name of G-d in the clouds until seeing that Au edition. So striking (pun!). I had to go back and re-examine the silver for it, a bit smaller in the overall design compared to other features. I wonder why they made that change? Thoughts?

Maybe it represents Jehova's second coming. You shouldn't slam the door at his witnesses Cathy, they have so much to teach you.
C'est fantastique!

I do love some of those "flying saucer" devices on coins and jetons of this era. Didn't even notice those were hands until I read your post. I'm more used to seeing the wrist end of the hand coming out of the clouds and the hand being out there in space. Not used to seeing a pair of hands supporting an object like this. At first glance, I took it to be something similar to Leonardo da Vinci's "tank", with cannons firing outwards.
(Of course, it could also be a flatulent jellyfish, I suppose.)
Another neat detail: I love the ships spilling out of the cornucopia on the reverse.
This piece is simply breathtaking. I would love to hold it in hand and go over the whole thing with a loupe.
Why, I'll bet if you zoomed in close enough, you'd see even more detail... a rat climbing the rigging of one of those ships... a tiny speck of a flea on the rat's back...

You need to ask?
Looks pretty darned advanced to me!
