Who here has any embarassing Pop number coins in their Reg sets?

For example, in my Peace Dollar set, I have a 1923 Plain with the following numbers:

7360 1923 S$1 MS62 2735 80297

Only 2735 at MS62 and over 80,000 graded higher! I think I need to upgrade this one pretty soon!

In my Ike $ Set, my 1976-D Type 1 is a real winner:
1976-D TYPE 1 7420 $1 Type 1 MS63 37 903
Almost 30 times graded higher!

For my Morgan $ Set, how about the 78-S
7082 1878-S S$1 MS61 300 17730
My gosh, I must have a rare low condition one!image

Does anyone here have anything like this, or am I just lucky?image

1908 No Motto Saint in MS63. Ten or eleven thousand graded, if I recall correctly. Of course, your gold coins will probably have higher populations, as a general rule. Who wants to buy raw gold sight-unseen? No thanks.

PS- Larry- speaking of gold coins, I owe you and many of my other customers an apology for not making it to the post office on Tuesday (my usual shipping day). This Tuesday is gonna be the day, barring a catastrophe. Sorry for the delay.

My personal favorite is the 1904 $20 I have -- MS62 (36,423 at that level and 43,254 higher). And to think I have trouble finding an upgrade. image

ALmost my whole gold set is like that. I have the lowest grade average out of all the pcgs registered sets that are %100 complete.

My $20 Lib is also a 1904 in MS62, but "S" mint. I don't recall the population. Certainly in the thousands, probably tens of thousands.

    Wow.

My worst one is pop 2403 with 1323 better (41-S Walker).
    I think they're overpriced which is why I haven't bought a ms65.

    I'll give in eventually though.

Yes - I'm embarrassed to say that I have a pop 36 with none finer coin in my MS set. image

Does it count that the coin's an obvious undergrade?

I could not imagine being embarrassed. I collect coins, not pop figures. I could not care less whether I have a pop 1 or a pop 100,000 coin. The pop figures help me set realistic goals about trying to obtain a coin at a certain grade level.

The population figures really only help those folks who are competing at the very top of the different registrys. It does help in knowing how many may be out there if you are looking for a specific coin. Also, how many your series has had graded contributes significantly. Any of the Morgan collectors can tell you that.

I have quite a number of Mercs near the top of their pops, but I am a No Bands collector so their value is significantly less as is the demand for these coins. I do like the feature, but it is just another information point.

    Tom and Deepcoin,

Good points. It's not that I'm embarrassed about any of my coins, but the population
#s can give a quick overview and show you which coins you may want to upgrade. When
I see over 80,000 23 Peace $s graded above MS62, I feel like it is a good candidate for
upgrading, which I am going to do soon.image

Of course, as always people should buy what they like, and not worry so much if
    others like the same thing.image

I am embarrased at one of my coins. How about a 1999-D Rosie in AU58 image. I guess I was on drugs when I found that GEM.

I have several "embarrassments" in my Morgan set. One of them, a MS63 1881-S I keep around only because it has some of the most intense blue and red toning I have ever seen on a Morgan. Here are some of the numbers:

    1879 S$1 MS61 121 5398
    1881-S S$1 MS63 34335 106203
    1885-O S$1 MS64 35501 13576

Well certainly I am embarrased about one of my former coins that I used to enjoy very much.

It is very embarrassing to admit that it is a 1867 Proof-65 Shield nickel with Rays.

The entire PCGS population in all proof grades stands at 38.

    Why is that embarrassing???????????

The answer: Only 35 were minted. :-(

    I am embarrassed.
