What a card!

So what do you guys think the final price on this beauty will be? Looks like it's heading for well over half a million.

I should keep my negative thoughts to myself, because it is an amazing card and it's absolutely incredible that it went this many years in that great of condition, but what's up with the centering? Do you think they overlooked it somewhat because all the other attributes of the card are flawless?

Maybe it's the cynic in me, but a PSA 10 Mays this late in the game? I'm about 1 or 2 more "grampa's attic" finds from suggesting these aren't real. Forensic cardboard analysis is coming, and certainly not from PSA.

I measured the L/R centering at 59/41, which is within PSA 10 standards.
  • That cards looks like it came out of a modern heritage pack. Amazing!

Centering should have kept it in a 9. Nice bump for the seller.

    Thanks,

When I clicked to it with anticipation...bam.. the centering is what jumped out at me.....when a "million dollars" gets thrown around id expect a little better centering....but otherwise, wow!
Interested in higher grade vintage cards. Aren't we all. image

You're right Gemyanks10. The centering on the front looks worse than 55-45. Isn't that the limit in PSA's grading standards for a 10?

It's an old grade that was reholdered. The tell tail sign is the cert number starting with zero.

It's also possible it bumped on review in which case cert is retained and card is also reholdered.

60/40. It's within PSA standards. Albeit barely, but, it wouldn't deter me if I had the $$$ image

I remember seeing that card raw at a houston show way back in the day. I think he wanted like 50,000 for it. Raw. And he described it as Gem Mint as well. And it was in a 1 inch screw down.
    Awesome card!

If they're over tightened or don't have a recess for the card, yes.

Not always and depends on how tight you make it.
But thats how it was back then. And I do'nt know how long it stayed that way. It was right around when PSA first started to become important in the hobby. But thats how I saw it at a show before it got graded.

If I'm forking up 500K to a million dollars for a card, centering ought to be closer to 50/50 and better than 59/41, but I'm a centering geek

This auction also has the Rose, Ryan, and Kareem PSA 10 1/1's so we are about to watch total madness and the "buy the holder" philosophy gone wild. Should be fun to watch...

I hope the seller is the same guy who was asking 50k for it raw. Boy I bet he got a lot of lip for that price. Now who is laughing. Hope it hits a mill.

As a huge Kareem fan and watcher of his cards nice examples rarely turn up. This PSA 7 one is a real beauty but alas I cannot afford it:

  • I have some background information on the '53 Mays. It was very recently owned by Ken Kendricks, the Arizona Diamondbacks' owner. In fact, this card was part of a display of his amazing collection of high-grade classic cards only a couple of months ago at the Phoenix Art Museum (The '38 Goudey Dimaggio Heritage is auctioning is also from the same Kendrick collection.). I purchased the card in May of 1998 through a Superior Sportcard auction, shortly after it was initially graded. This was the first '53 Mays that had graded a "9". The hammer price was $32,000, but with the 10% buyer's fee (Times have changed!) the final total was $35,200 (not counting shipping). As some will remember, Superior was owned by Greg Bussineau. The way they did the format then was to have all the bidders on separate phone lines -- I believe Tim Craven, Greg's assistant, said there were five bidders left still interested in bidding. Then, they simply went round the group, asking each bidder if he (I don't believe there were any women bidders.) was interested in going up to the next bidding increment. It was over in a minute or two. I was very surprised that I won. About a year or two later, I needed to sell it, but before it was auctioned it was decided to see if it would "bump" to a "10". It did. I think it went for about $95,000. This was in about 2000 or 2001. I believe it was purchased by the former pitcher Tom Candiotti, who at one time had a great collection. Maybe he still does. He's been a long-time radio color man for the Diamonbacks. It may be that it went from Candiotti to Kendricks in a straight sale, though I don't even know for sure if Candiotti was the person who bought it when I had it sold at auction. I believe there are only two PSA 9's, along with this 10. In fact, the 9's were graded shortly after this card was initially graded a 9; when it was submitted on a review, maybe the graders at PSA felt this card was superior to the other 9's they had recently graded and decided to give it the bump. Any of us who have been doing this for awhile have a lot of stories. Unfortunately, most of them are filled with wry regret!

So I guess someone had it reholdered. Surely they visited PSA in person. No way I would ship it to be reholdered.

    +1

I had a good inclination this card had bumped on review at some point.

Thanks for sharing the back story!
