USD 2009a Security Ribbon Question

Hi All

Stumbled across some $100 2009a with strange color security ribbon olive green as opposed to Blue. Printing error maybe or somehow dyed. The rest of the note looks genuine all the usual security features.

Normal note

Different Note

Any thoughts?

  • These "green" ribbon notes have turned up before. Here is a link to a discussion about them on another forum:

    Cool!
  • Thanks for the link , interesting read , variation in color maybe due to adverse environment changes. The notes are not washed , they are circulated but not bad condition. We have 4 notes so I guess I need to convince my Boss I should be able to keep at least 1.

Stu, you should call Laura at the PCGS Currency office and ask her about authenticating it.
  • Thanks Delistamps , I have already authenticated the notes , that was my first concern , suspicious mind. I train people in counterfeit detection as part of my role so have the necessary access.

Although New counterfeits pop up all the time so I was hoping it was a printing error or dyed to ease my fears. I guess time will tell if this greening can be explained better than "adverse environment changes"

Delistamps wasn't suggesting that you have Laura determine if it is a genuine $100 bill. Laura is an expert on US currency errors and it would be worth your while to get her take on the legitimacy of the "error." If a genuine error, it would be worth while to have PCGS Currency authenticate and grade the note.

Ah apologies my mistake , I wasn't aware of that, haven't used their service so far. Yes good suggestion.
  • Quick update on these , I contacted Laura as suggested and she confirms these are not errors , but are chemically changed.
  • You should ask around to see if acetone or some other chemical bath could change the color of the strip.
