If the top card of a vintage cello pack is oc,will many be oc too if opened?

I see many graded 68-77 cello packs graded on ebay and a few old cellos like 59 football. I know it is usually a loss opening them but what are the chances that the cards will be centered off a pack that has an oc card on top?

It is a good indicator, but not guaranteed.

Lol yeah, I know it's not him, but with 40+ word thread titles, it is reminiscent.

Mr. spazzy there's no way to know for sure, although a strong working knowledge of each year's product and associated possibilities might help. There are guys here with a treasure trove of information to back up their pursuits. If you bust open enough stuff you'll find that the oddest surprises do occur. Usually ugh.....but, occasionally - wow.

Hey Spazzman.... I love Travis T's comment, "oddest surprises do occur. Usually ugh.....but, occasionally - wow." Oh man, that speaks volumes!!
Anyway, for the most part in vintage packs (50's and 60's), I found if the top/bottom cards are off, then you'll also find the same consistency throughout the pack.
That, however, is just a general statement as one will never know unless they, well, open the pack.
I've torn into a number of 1959 Topps Football Cello packs over the years - yes, peer pressure and alcohol may have been involved - and those cards are all over the place. Even had totally miscuts showing and pulled some killer centered MINT singles. So, that's one year that blows the entire 'consistency' comment out da back side.... Whereas the few 1958 Topps Football Cello's I was lucky enough to rip, followed nearly the same centering as the top card. But, in general, if you were going to snag a pack to attack, I'd go for one with more centered cards showing.... good luck.

I've always been scared of those 1970 cellos that Fritsch always has on eBay because the back cards are so poorly centered. I think L.O.P. has good advice to go for packs with centered cards showing but I also feel that the inside cards can be off center. Just seems to have better odds if you start with visible centered cards.

i myself have also opened a fair amount of older football cellos 1959s and a few 1958s and i have noticed the same thing as luvoldpacks said...i was lucky enough to purchase a cello box about 10 years ago from a seller from new york and what i did was open the ones which had tears or i felt like the wouldnt grade high because of the centering and kept about 10 of the packs with centered cards on top and bottom to be graded a few years ago...as far as baseball goes i have opened some 1968s and also a few 1962s and for some reason those are also very hit or miss usually if the top card is off center or bottom i would expect at least 4 of the cards to be the same way...when i try to buy cellos now i must admit centering is the first thing i look for i would rather have a pack with a few tears and a lower grade as to having a pack that is off center...just my take...terry
  • 50/50. Have no fear. We have all witnessed the first 19 cards of a 1955 cello pack have the same terrible identical OC cut then the very last card be a near perfectly centered Clemente rookie. The last card having no resemblance to the first 19 cards. It may be on youtube.

The other factor with cellos is the tightness of the wrap. Cellos from 1973 forward were pretty tightly wrapped, resulting in corner dings or touches on most of the top and bottom cards in the pack. 1980 saw a return to the looser cello wrap though there were both loosely and tightly wrapped cellos that year.
