reverse up

Does any one feel as I do that PCGS and NGC should offer to place pretty toned coins reverse up if the toning is on the reverse?

PCGS does offer coins with toned reverses flipped in the holder. I just BIN off of eBay this morning one of them.
NGC won't do it as per a Thread that is running right now on their forum. It is stated by one of their reps it would be too difficult on the administrative end to do so.

I have never seen an NGC reverse up. PCGS does do it, but I am not sure of the PCGS standard. Does anyone know? Will they holder any reverse up on request, or must it meet their subjective opinion that the reverse merits it? I think reverse up is a good policy when that is where a coin's value lies. A few nice reverse ups are on ebay right now slabbed by PCGS, including a nice 1887 in ms64 for 199.

I had an NGC Ike slabbed reverse side up (an error that was missing reverse clad layer).

I have been pushing NGC in their Forum off and on since February on this subject. My problem has been that I have posted several times in their Moderated Questions & Answers Forum and most never got posted. David Lange states that most collectors and dealers want their holders to be uniform with the obverse facing out with the exception of State Quarters. All I can say to that is he is talking to different dealers and collectors that I have talked to.

Hey Art, I tried some supporting post on that NGC forum too, but got "moderated" too. image

I agree with your point, it sounds like Mr. Lange may be trying to dictate his, uh, retentiveness to the rest of the world. image If the original submitter though it was reverse-worthy, most likely future buyers will too.

But in any case -- the point I tried to make in my censored post was that the guy paying for the grading is the primary customer, and that's who they should be listening to.

If some future owner down the line can't stand that reverse staring at them, they can always pay NGC to have it reholdered, which certainly doesn't hurt NGC.

I believe NGC is just shooting them selves in the foot on this one. The responses they give for not doing this are contradictory and in some cases don't even make sense. One example one of the moderators state that it might be too expensive. Why it would cost more for a guy to reverse a coin in it's holder is beyond me. If the profits didn't out weigh the expense there is no way in the world PCGS would do it. It seems that when David Lange has a mind set he won't budge off of his convictions..
