Older wax box rips?

Does anyone do any older group wax box rips or is everything pretty much newer these days?

A $10k vintage baseball wax box costs about $278/pack if it has 36 packs and $417/pack if it has 24 packs (1973
and earlier). With 10 cards in a pack, you "lose" 2 cards per pack to wax and gum. So your net cost per card using
the pack prices provided above are about $34.75 and $52.00 respectively.
Definitely not something you would want to try with a "frankenstein" vintage wax box, as there would probably be
little consistency in the pack condition and card centering from pack-to-pack. With a factory box, there are probably
only a few early 1970s boxes that have enough potential star content with sufficient value in PSA 8 or better to justify
that kind of rip.
Probably the best example I can think of are the 1972 Topps Series 5/6 wax boxes. They were all found together
(slightly less than a case in total) by BBCE in the possession of a retired Topps executive who put them away back
in the day, and they sat is a good environment all those years until BBCE found them. They meet all of the important
criteria including:
- They are in excellent condition
- It's hard to imagine that they are not "factory" issue
- Star content includes Rose, Marichal, Ryan, Kaline, Garvey, Carew, Carlton TR, Morgan TR and F Robinson TR
- Content also includes the less common high-number series, as well as some decent semi-stars
The last major vintage board megabreak that we did was in August, 2012. It included one of these boxes at $225/pack
(and also an 86 Fleer BKB box at $375/pack). From the 2 packs of 1972s I received I pulled a Ryan that graded
PSA 7 and a Rose that graded PSA 8.5. I also got 5 high numbers that graded PSA 9 and one that graded PSA 10.
You can find the thread on the forum starting 8/9/2012 and see all 849 posts.
Those same boxes today usually list around $11k-$12k (24 packs), or about $500/pack. That's about the only vintage
box in that price range I can think of that even has a remote possibility of being worth breaking. I'm holding several
of these boxes now (intact) for just this reason.
1971 wax boxes are so expensive and scarce that they could never be considered (although I was told by someone
who would know that a certain major-league team owner bought and ripped several of them about 6-7 years ago).
Series 1 boxes would include Munson, Jackson, Blyleven, Niekro, Hunter, McCovey, Carlton, and Rose. At least 4 of
these cards would be $1k+ in PSA 8 (and multiples of that in PSA 9), but are you really going to risk $3750/pack for
a 4/132 chance at Munson, Jackson, Blyleven or Rose and then also getting a PSA 9?
1970 wax boxes are also so high in price now, and there isn't much economic reason to attempt a rip. The best two
series would be either a series 5 box (because of the lo pop AS cards, Stargell, Aaron and Gibson) or the mixed series
5/6/7 which would add a chance at Rose, Mays, Banks, Bench, F Robinson and Ryan. But the ask on these is steep
at roughly $1k/pack, with only the PSA 9 AS cards, the Aaron and the Ryan having a chance at getting you what you paid
back.
For 1973 the Schmidt series and all series boxes don't have enough content value to justify it, and then starting in 1974-1977
there isn't much content other than Brett RC, Yount RC and Brett 2nd year.
Starting in 1978 the prices get a little more down to earth, so that might be the point where it can still be done (the card count
per pack also went up after 1973 so that also helps the odds).
On the other hand, if you love ripping vintage and have the money to put into it that you don't mind risking, there are
plenty of people on this forum who would love to see these kinds of vintage rips.

This was a perfect response, very detailed and insightful. Seeing and reading about these packs and boxes being opened fascinates me. I just love it. I was curious if anyone does it as I am just now getting back into the hobby after a long, almost twenty year hiatus and noticed all of these "case" and "box" breaks of the new cards being done.
I never considered cost per card along with the gum card issue.
I definitely do not have the means to purchase one of these boxes to rip by myself but would definitely be interested should the board decide to do any from any sport.
The 86 Fleer BKB had to be fun with only 132 cards in the set!
Again, thank you for the detailed response!

The box with the biggest potential upside from the 1970s is a 1975 mini wax box. The challenge, though, is finding a box that is not from an OC case, as most of them are these days.
Tim
If you had to buy a 75 mini box where would you go to in order to find a "non OC case."

LOL!!
KC, if I knew where to buy them like that, I'd be broke...until my submissions came back from PSA, at least!

I'd have interest in those. I figure those are more affordable than vintage.

Now that was a good one and very true!
Remember when we did the 75 rack box rip and sold out in 11 minutes......@$250/rack.

Steve usually bulks up and brings back some nice stuff he purchased
I wonder what he will have left for sealed case/box breaks
Anyone else itching for a Post-National BBCE Group Rip??

This may be an opportunity to set up a nice one. Would love to break some boxes/cases from prior to 1978.

I'm planning at being at National and would be happy to try and set up a break again if Steve has anything appropriate.

Above average for the rip! People were trying to sell their "slots" with stars at psa 8 prices! Not too many stars pulled, no schmidt

That rip was an abomination..

There should have been 240 slots instead of 660, so that everyone who put money in received something.
Cost per slot would have been higher, and it still would have been a disaster due to content, but
this isn't the way our rips on this board have been done. We would never fill them this way because
we are collectors, not gamblers.
If we are lucky enough to get the opportunity to break something from National it will be done
consistent with how we have always operated such opportunities if I am running it

Dave - hope you make it, and let me know if you make it in. You can send a text to my number. I am in Wednesday-Friday.

IMO Blowout cards rip was done in a way that maximized their interests, not the participants.

I agree, the group purchases and rips you and Cincy used to run are much better IMHO.
