1964 Topps Baseball coins ... how much of a market exists for them raw?

I recently came across my brother's accumulation of 100 (some are duplicates) 1964 Topps Baseball coins. These are not slabbed but many do seem to be in very nice shape, especially the All Star versions (They have been kept in coin holders for at least the past 20 years. The lot includes Mickey Mantle, Sandy Koufax, Willie Mays, Al Kaline among other well known players.

I have been told that to get any money for them they will have to be graded and slabbed by PSA as either 9 or 10 grade.

While I know l lot about coins I know just about nothing about these.

1. Do they have much, if any, value when raw?

2. At what point is it worthwhile to send them in to PSA?

3. What is the best way to sell them raw?

4. What is the best way to sell them if they have been slabbed?

    1. $500-600 for a nice EXMT-NM raw complete 164 coin set with variations.

    2. I would only send in the very best examples of HOFs for grading.

    3. Sell them as complete set or near complete set.

    4. Individually on ebay through larger consignment seller.

Note - these are tough to get in high condition - almost always scratching, off-center, pitting, rust, etc. Peruse the PSA 9 and 10 listings on ebay and compare with yours.

If you think they'll grade 8s or better for Star/Lower Tier HOFer, for Mantle it looks like as low as a 6 will still sell for $50.

Bundle them up and sell as a lot on eBay yourself or send to one of the major consignment shops (Probstein/PWCC/etc.)

Been quite a while since I put this set together. Are the Causey, Hinton and Mantle AS still the only coins with variations. Is it known which of the variants are scarcer (or are they about equal in number) ? What approximate value do the variations add to a set without them ?

Sure there's interest in the '64 Topps coins. They're very condition sensitive; however, they sell in all grades, even the beat up ones if priced correctly. In addition to the super stars, there are a few short prints which sell for substantial premiums in high grade, but you don't have to get 8-9 or 10 grades to sell them slabbed. Buyers can be found in most grades for the likes of the super-star Hall of Famers such as Mantle, Mays, Aaron, Clemente, Banks, etc.

I've bought larger lots in eBay auctions for a few dollars a coin in order to purchase some star coins efficiently, selling off my duplicates. The lots sell pretty readily. On the other hand, much of the mid to high grade coins are offered through Buy it Now and tend to be way overpriced, sitting unsold for months.

Good luck, let us know how you decide to go about selling.
    HAPPY COLLECTING!!!

I have been looking into the grading of these pieces and have come to the conclusion that few, if any, would merit the 9 or 10 grade. I will probably try selling them as a lot, raw, average condition. At least the group does contain several of the more popular players. Many of the coins show some wear/rust on the obverse upper rims, which I suspect is typical for these.
