'80 Henderson rookie

Anyone notice PSA 9 Hendersons selling in the $800-$900 range?

Text

Thought I paid a premium at $330 for my nicely centered Henderson about year & half ago.
His RC is well worth owning but this market continues to get crazier.

I hadn't checked his prices in a while. It is quite shocking. They were stagnant for a long time at 350-400. I really think this is the new normal.

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

Yeah glad I got a few when I did. I knew this one was undervalued. A 10 is too expensive so everyone wants a 9

It's not a particularly difficult card to find in PSA 9, but he's an elite player that was very undervalued IMO in relation to some of the other HOF RC's that have skyrocketed in that era so it was inevitable that we'd see an increase.

  • Nice design on the 1980 Topps and an iconic looking RC also. It's a great looking card when you find a nice one.

My VCP sub expired. Don't know most recent price & date.
I'd LOVE to see what a 10 would fetch in this market

You know, in all the 1980 I ripped, I only pulled one Henderson PSA 9. Over a dozen 8s and 8.5s. May have to send some for review or crack out.

If anyone has a very centered nice PSA 9(or 8.5 or 8) Rickey and wants to sell please pm me. Sorry to clog up this thread but no one replied on the BST board last month. Thanks!

    Id do the same.
  • Just picked up a BGS 8.5 today that I'm hoping crosses to a 9 (fingers crossed)!

If you do a crossover make sure to put a minimum grade. Some BVG 8.5's of this card I have seen have bad corners

  • Thanks for the heads up! Do I send it in still in the BVG case and just list a min.?

Yeah unless it is nice enough to crack out. I did not have much luck with crossover's but sure others here have. Just a thought if you want you can post a scan or clear picture of it and get advice from people here on what it might grade or if it's worth it to send in.
  • I wonder how much of this price change relates to people trying to bid shill the price up. After all, this card was selling in the low $400 range on eBay LAST MONTH.

LOL, yes, I checked too. PSA 9's are $400 cards. They actually dropped in price slightly in the past 3 years. It was a $400 card 3 weeks ago. It makes me laugh to see people PANIC buy at $800. Idiots.

I hope you are right so I can buy a few more for $400!

if this one has been shilled, id wait...some of the shilled cards in general are coming back down from their peak.....and there are soooo many rickey rooks out there.....and more still being pulled/subbed/resubbed
Interested in higher grade vintage cards. Aren't we all. image
  • Do you think this BVG 8.5 is worth cracking and subbing to PSA in hopes of a 9? The white dot in the black background is from the scanner (my first scan).

In hopes of a 7, probably; in hopes of a 9, extremely unlikely. T/B centering eliminates it from an unqualified 9 without even being able to make out the corners.

leave it in the bgs holder. I do not see a psa 9 grade for the Henderson. great looking in the bvg holder. I also agree that the centering is going to hold back from a better grade. I have two Henderson psa 8 cards and they look like your 8.5.
  • Damn, ok thanks for the advice, guys!

PSA 7 at best with that centering. Sell it.
  • T/B centering is close to some weaker 9's but still too much top border. Plenty of PSA 8's fit the bill though.

Probstein just listed dozens of PSA 8 Henderson's.

Very odd bidding is high already for so many and for so many that are not centered.
  • I picked up a BVG 9 a while back that I thought about sending to PSA. It looks better than other 9s I've seen on ebay (centering is REALLY nice), but I still get worried.

The same 3 or 4 people have bid on every available example, including and besides the Probstein auctions. One person specifically seems to be attempting to corner the Rickey PSA 8 market, with one competitor at the high end, and a couple others for the poorly centered examples.

Good research Travis. There are 7256 PSA 8's of this card in the population report. I guess we will see a lot more for sale soon. I did think it was undervalued at $50. $80+ might be the new norm.
  • Just sold that BVG 8.5 posted above for $125 BIN...

I am in the market for a nicely centered PSA 8. I'm glad I'll get the chance to bid again on some of these in a couple weeks.
  • Apparently all it takes is one person. Now everyone thinks a good buy as at $80 to $100.
  • Henderson 8's are everywhere. In the last month the Henderson PSA 10 pop increased by 1 to 16, and I think the PSA 9 pop has increased by 25 - 30 to 1582. Either some bumping, some nice raw that's been held back or some fortunate pack rippers.
