This nice little item came recently.

Gold, 24mm, 8.48gm, Krause World Coins KM-341
About the size of a US $5 gold piece

King Fuad was King of Egypt from 1922 to 1936, and was the father of the more famous King Farouk.

From King Farouk's Memoirs, Al Arabiya News:

One of the characteristics that Farouk did acquire was his father’s love of practical jokes.

Fuad would sometimes humor himself by placing a gold coin in a bucket of clear acid and watching unsuspecting servants scream in agony from the resulting acid burns after trying to retrieve its contents, according to Roger Owen, a Middle East history professor at Harvard University.

Fortunately, gold is impervious to most acids.

King Fuad was not the most famous Egyptian king in 1922 as that honor belonged to the Pharoah Tutankhamun or "King Tut" whose tomb was discovered that year.

As usual, great story to go with the great coins, WB2.

Great story to us NOW, that is. At the time, you're right- that was pretty nasty of ol' Fuad-Fuad-Jerky-Jerkwad!

One hopes the acid wasn't strong enough to cause lasting damage to human skin.

I thought you were going to relate a prank more along the lines of a squirting boutonniere flower or joy buzzer. Yikes. image

But I suppose he thought he was avenging himself against sticky-fingered courtiers and servants, of which there had to have been a few.

Perhaps someone even got comeuppance for an earlier five-finger discount; who knows.

    Still... yeah, that's pretty nasty.

And far worse to be a peasant, as always.
