Someone stole this 1976 Topps Vending Box

Granted the seller didn't do himself any favors by using "76" instead of "1976" in his title and ending the auction on the Friday evening of a holiday weekend, but this appears to be a downright steal:

1976 Topps Vending Box

Does anyone know what the entire lot went for in the PWCC auction?

The original lot of 22 boxes hammered at about $550 a box. They did not go for full retail price as the PWCC listing acknowledged that the cards in the boxes had been handled at some point. This was the exact disclaimer taken from the PWCC auction:

***Please Note: it's out belief that at least some of the cards in some of the boxes may have been lightly handled at one time in the past. There are a few random instances in 2-3 boxes where cards are backwards and a couple other instances where the factory packing order appears slightly adjusted. We discussed this observation with the consignor and they seemed to recall 'briefly looking at some of the cards in the 1990s, but would have then placed them back shortly after viewing'. Everything about the cards in these boxes suggest a pack fresh appear, consistent with what's advertised. While we 100% guarantee that no stars have been removed or cherry picked, due to the potential for light handling we cannot certify that some/all of these vending boxes are as-factory issued. We ask that prospective bidders please bid accordingly.

Correct. And i believe the original auction photos showed that they had clearly been searched. To what extent is/was debatable.

Thanks guys, the "statement" makes it sound like the boxes are as legit as any (i.e. unsearched), but I can see where that would reduce the price considerably.

I love 1976 cards as much as anyone since they were THE set of my youth. Having said that I would not touch these boxes with someone else's money.

There is no way for any seller to guarantee that cards will be mint or centered in a vending box or pack. That is the risk you run when buying and ripping unopened product. Paying $5.00 for a PSA 9 common is actually less than what you'd pay to submit that same card to PSA to get a PSA 9 when you factor in the grading and shipping fees. PSA does not authenticate boxes.

If someone is offering commons in PSA 8.5/9 for $4-5 I would grab them all day. With grading fees alone you are making out. I would take any 1975 minis or 1976 commons for $4-5 if they were for sale.

I had no idea PWCC is now in the box authenticating business.

But it seems odd. They are authenticating open boxes? Weird

Yeah and they're also selling 68's from recently opened wax packs; never got an answer to this either--also weird:

I bought a vendor box of 76's and every card had a corner dent from being dropped somewhere along the line. I hate to pay 5 bucks for every common in PSA 9. I have bought mint sets and returned them. Nearly every set out there available is full of ex cards. But vendor boxes are filled with off center cards even if they are legit. Is there anyone I can buy unopened stuff and be comfortable. You can't send them back if you go through them even if they aren't what they were sold as.

I agree with this and also why "FASC" is overrated, an essentially meaningless term and not worth the premium (or 3-5% max)

They are off to a terrible start if so but what it looks like is a "No return if seal broken" type wrapping. IOT, they are preparing for the potential buyer to return the boxes when they see the contents on a few have been tampered. Bottom line, it's lame to certify a box as "not cherry picked" when someone pulled them out. If I'm not mistaken, sequencing plays a big part in these boxes.

FASC is actually underrated. It's a label that is slowly but surely disappearing and is the only way to make sure you are getting unsearched packs.

I'd gladly pay double or more for a FASC box vs a Frankenstein one. In fact I think it's like comparing apples to oranges.

I have to agree with the FASC designation from BBCE and nobody else. I wouldn't pay double but def a premium.

I guess what I mean here is that Frankenstein boxes have the potential of being completely searched whereas FASC is 100% unsearched. To me this makes a huge difference in value.

The only vintage rack boxes I ever see anymore are from 1979. The last FASC one went for around $3,500 and the last Frankenstein went for around $2,000. And yet of the 4 boxes available on eBay only 1 is FASC at $4,500, 3 are Frankenstein asking $4,500, $4,000 and $3,000.

IMO the only one with even a chance of getting anywhere close to asking is the FASC one.
