1966 Topps #35 Bobby Orr - Rookie Card (Authentic vs. Non-Authentic)

I am a Canadian collector who has been attempting to acquire Bobby Orr rookie cards. I prefer raw since the price is less. I have come across information about counterfeits.

I am curious as to what information the members here have. The biggest issue I find is under the 1965-66 text on the back there is a dot along the line below. I would like to know if this is CONCRETE evidence of a reprint or if there are authentic cards that actually have that dot?

Any information would be greatly appreciated. The only information so far I received was from his personal website bobbyorr.net which states it is a reprint.

I love Orr's rookie, and have collected hockey cards for many years, but unfortunately can't help you with detecting counterfeits. I would suggest, if you can't find anyone knowledgeable on the subject, to study the raw ones you have now alongside ones that have been graded. There are good sources online that provide high resolution scans of authentic versions of this card. I would also consider buying several counterfeits for your collection to study. You can read here, there, ad everywhere, but nothing beats hands-on experience. Best of luck, welcome, and please share some of your collection when you have the time.

  • Thanks, I was hoping someone would be able to offer some incite into this. I found a card for sale as an American Grading Authority 8 NM with the dot on the back.

The Bobby Orr RC is definitely the hardest counterfeit to spot, as there are many different variations and very minor imperfections compared to the authentic RC. On one batch of reprints there is a circle interrupting the grid lines on the back of the card, underneath the 1965-66 text. Other reprints will show the traditional dotted black lines, although it is not as blatant as other reprint cards. Another area of the card you can look at for counterfeit detection is the “Bobby Orr” on the front of the card. If the yellow text is not solid, but shows some red dots in the background, I would question the authenticity. Overall be very careful when buying this card, it is very easy to overlook authenticity issues.

When you are going for one of the Holy grail of Hockey cards I would concentrate on graded examples. I tried the raw route and got burned. BTW I think you are wise in investing in the Orr rookie as he is easily in the GOAT discussion.

I usually only concentrate on players that are in the GOAT discussions, for example: Jim Brown, Bobby Orr, Hank Aaron, Griffey Junior, Bonds, Clemens, Kareem, Magic, Bird, Kobe, Montana, etc
