Laters on I'll post some Scots booty - since it looks like for the first time since 1707 Scotland will be self determinate soon.

Unless there is a move for other countries to exit the EU, this move will not have any real long term effects on the US economy. And since GB never adopted the Euro, there will be (unfortunately) no interesting changes for paper money collectors.

    Oh really?

One thing is very certain - Scotland will hold another referendum on independence since a very clear majority of Scots prefer to be a part of Europe - the Brexit will have just provided the final push that will compel the indecisives over to the independence camp.

So pray let me explain the consequences for paper money collectors, particularly of said Scottish notes - Scotland joins the EU, ditches the pound, adopts the Euro and bye bye 321 years of Scottish banknote issues.

Nice uni-face Royal Bank of Scotland note!

So SaorAlba, what would happen to the many Banks in Scotland if they adopted the Euro?

The banks will still function, but they will not issue notes anymore since that is the prerogative of the EU central bank. The only Scottish bank that would then issue notes would be RBoS since it owns Ulster Bank in Northern Ireland - but their note issues are exclusive to Northern Ireland.

Thanks. Interesting what may be the future for Scotland staying with the EU.

I didn't know RBoS owned Ulster.

Yes, it is correct that Scotland may hold another referendum for independence (voters there overwhelmingly wanted to stay in the EU). And, if successful, would probably join the EU. Whether they would adopt the Euro isn't a given, but certainly possible. So, it could spell the end of Scottish banknotes.

Curiously Northern Ireland was also heavily in favour of the EU - likely because of their closer proximity to an EU country ie Ireland. The dissenting voters are likely unionists, ie in favour of keeping NI as a part of the UK. Whilst Scotland has some rancorous politics, factor in the class and religious conflict in NI and a whole new "Troubles" could very quickly happen.

Jim - luckily for UNC notes, there will NOT be a decrease in numismatic value from brexit! At least I don't think so.

Robert, I tend to agree. My interest is with the exchange rate I have to pay. The price in GBP will stay the same, but what I pay in USD is now quite different due to the exchange rate.
