1966 Whitey Ford - one weird obsession

This started just buying a Topps Ford PSA 8 about 15 years ago. As time went by I picked up the OPC and then the Venezuela. It manifested into wanting autographed versions, and tracking down a nice Venezuela was tough. Finally I picked up the proof on a 10x eBay bucks day so just needed to upgrade, although slightly.

Please share some of your collecting obsession, with pics of course.

Holy crap and congrats for many reasons but mostly those Veni grades.

    Nice project.

  • Nothing crazy about those, awesome stuff. Ford is very underrated. Guy was an absolute winner.

That is an awesome run! I'm a huge fan of Venezuelans and don't think I've ever seen a signed PSA 4. Unbelievable!
  • Thanks for the compliments.

Dan, I love watching your obsession in collecting Yaz...just impressive.

That's quite an "ode" to Whitey.

Just incredible - thanx for posting.

When I can find it - I'll show you a contract he signed with a company back around 1988 or so for them to make a figurine of him - some signed. ProSport Creations Inc.

    Now, a "weird" obsession?

Kellogg's PEP cereal Babe Ruth Ring Premium

So, ya figure 1 is enough?

Well they made the rings in 7 colors and there's probably at least 4 different color backgrounds and variations to the actual "color" of the ring as such!

I'm up to 13 variations and counting!

That's a great Whitey Ford collection, B! Same with the Ruth rings, Mike. The challenge of the hunt is a big part of the enjoyment of collecting, and you two are doing it right.

Gotta love those cheesy staged poses from the 60's & 70's.
That's the first I've seen his '66 version.

    Cool collection!

Very nice! I purchased that card in the early 90s as a kid and it's always been one of my favorite cards. I have always debated on whether or not I should have Whitey sign it.

I am not sure what I love about it so much, but the Yankee stadium facade in the background is part of it.

Really pretty cards, and a great sig. No doubt about it that Whitey was a winner, right from the get go and through the end of his career... such an impressive W-L percentage.

I wonder besides favoring that pose, if he wasn't a bit annoyed at the Topps photographer for his '65 card? IMO, the closeup and focus on his wrinkles made him look old. Sort of related, in "The Great American Baseball Card Flipping, Trading and Bubble Gum Book"
Sy Berger was quoted as saying how tricky it could be to satisfy Willie Mays' vanity as to his pictures; which I bet may be why the repeats on his '65-'68, and '67-'69 Topps shots. image

It's a fun read and great nostalgia, for anyone interested in checking it out. Copies often on eBay too -- original editions and the '90s reprint, which is how I discovered it in college: https://www.amazon.com/American-Baseball-Flipping-Trading-Bubble/dp/0395586682

+1, they all look great, but that one really stands out.
  • Great Ford's. I had a mini obsession with Paul Coffey OPC rookies back in 09/10. Sold all off in 2011 so no pics remain, but had a mix of PSA/KSA/BGS. I have no idea why I liked that particular card so much either. A quirk LOL

You should get the blank back signed. Another blank back will pop up at some point but it might come at a time when you won't be able to get it signed.

A months back I picked up some files from the company Prosport Creations Inc.

One was Whitey Ford - what got me interested?

The main contract has his "full" name - I had never seen his auto in full:

Here's a handwritten note to the company from his "foundation":

    and the figurine:

I bought one of the artist's proof from a guy and it came in 2 pieces - he gave me a full refund; very classy.

edit: in the handwritten note - Whitey references "his team" - pretty impressive team!

  • Those Ruth rings are sweet, I've never seen them before.

That's a great idea but I've only seen one. I'll check around and see if other are available.

    Thanks
