Dr. J went for over $7,400 the other day. Was like a $1,200 card a few years ago.

This has been exciting to watch!

If I had these cards, I would sell EVERY ONE right now. Then I would go out and buy a really nice PSA 7.

I bought two Johnny U 1957 RC PSA 8 for 4K last year then sold them this year for 8k... Nice right? Wrong:

Best wishes to anyone coveting a Yaz RC in PSA 8 or better. In fact, grabbing anything within reach of a 7 is getting complicated. For any of these stud cards.

I sold my MJ rookie BGS 9.5 two nights ago for $9,400 and let Brent handle the hassle of auction/delivery etc.

Just couldn't risk that much lose(was $4500-5500 less than a year ago).

    Congrats on the sale.

Also, behold the power of the subgrades; amazing to see that Brent had two BGS 9.5's end at the same time, $10,000 apart from each other. Both had 3 9.5's. One had one 10 and the other had one 9. Likely the bidders are hoping for a grade bump on the more expensive one, but still, impressive to see another example of the difference.

Edit to add: There was also a PSA 10 in the same PWCC auction. One BGS 9.5 was at $9400, the other at $19,401. The PSA 10 went for $43,700. Assuming the BGS w/ 3 9.5's and a 10 as the subs has a great chance at crossover to a PSA 10, that seems like a wise investment by someone to double their money quick, if they were lucky enough to have a spare $20k laying around for such a gamble.

  • This is complete insanity. What is really going on here? Never seen anything like it(In sports cards). Stocks ,housing bubble,etc...yes but this is nuts. Oh yeah, Im not bitter, jealous,or whining about it.(I have a majority of these cards in my collection from long ago). Just can't wrap my head on what is happening here.

I know right. As much as it pains me I think I have to part with some of my collection.

These dramatic jumps in PSA 8 and 9 have not affected every HOF rookie, though.

Rod Carew has not taken off. Nor has Al Kaline. No huge rise fro Ozzie Smith, Paul Molitor or Eddie Murray.

Probably most surprising of all, Rickey Henderson in 9 has not budged.

Carew should take off I would think.... Seaver took off in psa 8 but a Carew is a lower pop than Seaver.
  • "Probably most surprising of all, Rickey Henderson in 9 has not budged."

Couple of guys on eBay have made a manipulation effort on the Rickey RC in psa 9 the last 2-3 weeks. Unsuccessfully so far. So everything's not going to plan there yet. I like the Molitor/Trammell in PSA 9 smudge free/limited tilt as one with decent potential from the 70's. Molitor nor Trammell are uber popular however.

It seems like just the all time great's cards have been taking off but I don't have enough data to confirm. Not to knock the above guys but it looks like the second tier stars like Ozzie, Eddie, etc... might take awhile to rise and the might never take off.

This happened with vintage unopened 2 or 3 years ago. This is either the new norm or a bubble. I'm not sure which yet

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

  • Even if it's a bubble does anyone see these cards settling back down to reasonable prices? An Aaron rookie in seven cost me 3,400 about 4 years back its doubled, the Kiufax in seven was 1,200 not to long ago now it's close to 5k. I can't see these going back they might stabilize or even dip a little but hasn't a new price point been established. Anything like this in over a 7 lol forget it I hope you had it already or have a boat load of disposable income.
  • You make a great point of them stabilizing however I just have a strange feeling that there is some crazy wide spread manipulation going on. Coupled with new investor money recently.

I think your probably right mick. Unless there is major economic downturn, these high end cards will most likely not go down too much. It seems we have reached the new normal. Maybe cards were severely undervalued. Look at them compared to fine art prices. At this level, it is hard not to sell some cards, but I know I could never afford to replace them when they are gone. So I guess I hold.

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

  • Oh I have most of the cards that have boomed in nice sevens minus some nice 57 rookies in 8. I've been tempted but I'm afraid they spike more and then I'm outta luck since I grabbed all of them at low prices years ago

    "Maybe cards were severely undervalued."

I tend to lean on the above for the cause of the recent dramatic price increases.

Fewer than 600 PSA 8 or better Reggie Jacksons? Barely 600 Seavers? Fewer than 400 of Stargell, Gibson or Brooks R?

When you think about it that way, I'd say this could be merely the tip of the iceberg for price escalation.

Because I seriously doubt that there will be 1,000 PSA 8+ Reggie Jacksons by 2018.

Carew is not as good as Seaver...plus Seaver played in New York. So...Seaver is rightly priced higher than Carew.

All I know is that if this is the new "normal", then I'm done collecting sports cards. With an annual paycheck of less than $40K (military retirement + VA disability), I simply can not compete in this atmosphere image

Wow. I wonder what an sgc 8.5 rose rookie would sell for? Maybe I am getting closer to selling

Along with the white blob next to the letter "e" in Rose. Not a strong 9. Hopefully those white spots are from the scanner not the card.

The Rose is being auctioned by a relatively new eBay auction house that has been trying very hard the last few months to become a relevant player

Not really new, just the latest Bassik rebranding.
