Hi Everybody .... I'm Dr. Nick!

I mean, Dr. Doug. Long time reader, first time poster.

I collected football cards for many years as a kid and teenager, felt out of the hobby in college, recently started a family, and am looking to get back into the swing of things!

It seems that graded cards are now a huge deal, so I bought a PSA membership and am putting together my first submittal to the Collectors Club.

Any tips or advice that you can provide for a newbie? I am thinking that I might want to send a mixture of vintage and modern cards now and get a feel for how they grade. If any of the cards that I sent got less than a 9.5 I would be very surprised. They all look as good now as the day I pulled them and they've been kept in heavy screwdowns since.

Thanks boys!

Doug

    Welcome to the forum.

Just an FYI PSA doesn't assign a 9.5 grade to any cards like BGS does.

    Good luck with your sub.
  • Oh darn should I send them to BGS instead? These 60s and 70s cards look prett good, with only a little rounding and a couple of creases. Wouldn't want to get lower grades than I know they deserve.

If you have rounding and creases I wouldn't send them in to any grading company. Probably looking at grades in the 2 range if that is the case.

If you send them you will certainly get a feel, Nick...err Doug

  • Maybe crease wasn't the right word. I mean small little bends, hardly noticeable at arm's length.

Don't have your hopes too high Dr. PSA will be cruel with rounding and creases, even at arms length.

I guess I'm a little slow on the uptake.

Why the reference to Dr Nick? And then call yourself "Doug?"

Yea, The Simpsons. Just a joke.

Ok, seems like I should hold off. Maybe try some raw card reviews before I take the plunge. Does PSA do those?

    OK.

    Welcome Doug.

What year are we talking about - with "fell out of the hobby?"

What is your "focus" going to be going forward?

    I'm assuming a FB guy?

Did you buy the 6 or 15 card sub?

Unless you have really, really good vision? A 10X loupe might help in reviewing the corners - and look for slight "production" wrinkles on the surface - front and back which will affect the grade.

Wishing you the best in re-joining the hobby.

    My simple advice?

    1. Establish a FOCUS. (otherwise one might wind up "all over the place" - trying to corner the market and this and that)

    2. Establish a BUDGET. (cuts down on the night sweats and screams into the night!)

    3. NEVER break rule 1 and 2.

And last - and this is just my opine; this is way more fun as a hobby than for investment.

I believe that trying to fund a retirement lakefront villa with cards seems like real work and it appears you already have a job. image

  • Thank you, Mike. I collected from 84-90ish and am focused on mostly vintage football like Namath, Brown, Unitas that I couldn't afford as a child. I also picked up a bunch of Montanas and Rices on eBay that I was going to mail in as well, thinking they are probably 10s. Look perfect to me. I bought the 15 card submittal as it seemed like a better deal. Now I'm not sure what to do.

  • Does anyone know how to post pictures on this thing? I figure some opinions would help

Get a photobucket account, then copy and paste the img link from there

Edit to add: the others are right. If your cards have any surface wrinkle at all and the corners are anything but sharp, you won't get anywhere close to a 9. I'm a little confused, since you say you've been out of the hobby and are completely new to grading, then talk about the grades you "know they deserve." I think it would be best to post scans and get grading opinions. Scans don't always show minor surface wrinkles, so be sure to disclose those to us in order to get the most accurate grading opinions. Good luck!
  • Ok thanks I'll try to figure that out and show you what I'm working with. I know they're 9s, at least, from looking at other cards on eBay. They look practically the same. If mine got 8s or lower it would be a major image
  • DanBessetteDanBessette Posts: 6,421 ✭✭✭
You're not listening. You described the cards as having creases and rounded corners. Unless you were lying, those cards are not 9's.... Or 8's.... Or 7's..... Or 6's..... Or 5's..... If I were you, I would review PSA's grading guidelines on their website. I will reserve further comment until you post scans of these mint, creased beauties.

  • I might have misspoke by saying creases. Just getting back into things. I mean the bends in cards where a little bit of the paper rolls up and you can see a little line on the card. We always used to call them creases but everyone knows those cards are mint or gem mint.

Gem mint cards with "lines" on them? I don't think I've ever seen that. Post scans please.

I'm gonna have to be skeptical Doug.

If you bought ungraded/raw cards on eBay, I doubt you're gonna see 10s. If they're that good?

The seller would've submitted them - just the nature of the beast IMO.

First scan the card and crop it.

Get a photo bucket account - attach the card to photo bucket and "edit" the card.

On the "resize" - keep to width to about 5 to 600 pixels - copy the URL and post it here.

When you post, there's a "picture frame" that you press to attach and post a scan.

Any card where a little bit of paper rolls up and you can see a little line is not mint or gem

If the majority of your posts are nonsense then you are right there is nothing you can say to convince us. If you start posting some useful info we will change our minds quickly.

For the record, everybody, I am sorry I've been a tool lately about OT threads. My bad.

On the other hand, I'm not sorry about the jargon I use in some of my posts, like "dude" and "sick" and "dope." I was a teenager in the 90s and I don't make any attempts to hide the fact. Just my style, and I couldn't possibly care less whether it's outdated. I've got kids who roll their eyes at me everyday, so I'm used to it.

Cards with "the paper rolls up and you can see a little line on the card" are not mint or gem mint. This is not an opinion.....it is a PSA fact.
