Card you wanted to pack pull but never could/did

More geared towards the time they were originally released, what is the card you were chasing that you opened untold number of packs for but never got one?

For me, I have two. The 1990 Score Baseball Bo Jackson shoulder pads/bat card. I must have opened five boxes, at $30 a box (which was a lot for a kid working at McDonald's) and never got one. Also from 1990, the Pro Set Lombardi hologram. Although, at the time, I heard there was a way to detect if a box had one of the cards in it. Does anyone know if that's accurate?

Please share your stories.

For me, it was the 1992 Fleer Rookie Sensations Frank Thomas card. The Jumbo packs with those cards were $2 to $3 per pack shortly after they were released...but it didn't matter- I still kept trying.

I got the Frank Thomas itch, too. After busting a couple 90 Leaf 2 boxes for nothing but shiny commons, I just started buying individual copies of #300 and accumulated over 100 of them before selling out. Glad I didn't waste more time on boxes. I should have been gobbling up 89 UD Griffeys then. Oh well.

I remember buying many packs (probably $20 worth- a lot of money since I was 15 at the time) of 1992-93 Classic Four Sports to try and get Manon Rheaume, the female goalie.

Now that I've written this I cannot honestly remember if I finally got one or not in those packs. image

For me it was the 89 UD Griffey. I bought tons of packs and they printed a billion copies, but somehow I never pulled one.

I used to ride my bike across town and buy packs, but never pulled a Jordan.

I got that card in one of the first 1990 Score packs that I opened. I remember thinking "how can this card be worth $10? - it's an easy pull." image

    Between 1985T and 1987 T/D/F (maybe ~125 packs), I never pulled a McGwire.

1991 Score Mickey Mantle autographed card. I purchased tons of packs from the store and freaked out when I got an unautographed Mantle, but was never able to get the signed card limited to 2500 from a pack.

1991 donruss elite. Never pulled one. My neighbor pulled the signed ryno though. Man, did I pine for that card.

    Andre Dawson 1977 Topps #473.

I've only bought a few packs. I would love to pull one myself one day!

    Thanks

I hit Henderson and Brett in back to back boxes. In the last twenty five years(mainly that year) I probably busted 50-75 more boxes and never got one. As a matter of fact, I have a series 2box I bought today for $5 at the show.

A household stud finder will detect foil/hologram cards as long as the wrapper is wax/plastic and not made of foil.

I never pulled a 1969 Topps Bench from a pack. I got close on finishing the set that way, but I had to pick up a Bench from a card show for $2.00 in I-was-gnawed-on-by-a-rat condition. "It's the lowest I can go. It books for $4.00 in MINT!!!"

84 Donruss Mattingly for me. I've opened racks and packs over the years and never hit one. I very vivdly remember opening about 6 packs from a box at $5 per pack in around 1986 in my local shop with no luck. The owner proceeds to pull a pack from the box right after I stopped opening and, of course, bam... he hits one. I have an unopened 84 Donruss box I bought from Steve about a year ago but don't have it in me to open it to try for the Mattingly, at least not at this point. I do enjoy picking up packs every time I put in an order to BBCE to keep trying.

Mine is more for my son.

It was 1990 and every Saturday I would take Justin to a BBC shop - we were stationed at Ft. Gordon - think it was called Augusta Stamp and Coin and he had a small BB card selection.

Each time Justin bought a pack of 90B in hopes of getting a Dave Justice RC.

Never did - we go one day - he buys a pack - no Justice and the card shop owner gives him the RC!

Very nice of him. Justice was kind of hot that year?

  • Mines a 87 Fleer Jordan. I have pulled a psa 9 rookie but have never pulled an 87. I think I have opened about 7 packs over the years.

That's an easy one: 86 Fleer Jordan. That would be so cool to pull a fresh one from a pack

A nice, decently centered 1980 Topps Rickey Henderson or a Nolan Ryan. I've opened lots of this stuff and have pulled just one of each, but both were incredibly off-center or had other issues. I would love to pull a "submittable" one of either of those two cards just once. I have slowed down ripping this stuff in the past year, but am starting to get the itch again to get my hands on some unopened here soon to keep trying.
