Alomar Bat

Hi All,

First post here so hopefully I'm doing everything ok. I recently purchased a Roberto Alomar signed bat (only the 2nd item in my collection but I've decided to start collecting!). I bought it assuming the bat was a normal bat but the bat shows some wear and tear and I'm wondering if it was game issued or game used (previous owner said he just maintained it on his desk and it would fall occasionally).

I'm thinking of submitting it to PSA to review if it was game issued but before I do I want to figure out how to know if it may be an MLB bat vs one bought off a shelf with his name on it. It's a cooper model R161 but I'm finding limited information online about which bat Alomar used when he was with cooper. Seems to be the right size and weight but it doesn't have his initial on the knob like I read most of his stuff had.

Any ideas or resources I could have to look at it? It's a cooper professional R161 model

Thanks in advance and please if I missed something in the post please let me know so I can do better next time!

Bump, any help would be awesome even if it's to say the bat is impossible to be game issued!

Welcome aboard and welcome back to collecting. I'm afraid I am not knowledgeable in the area of authenticating game used equipment. I didn't know and I don't think PSA does that type of service. As far as I know, they authenticate and grade cards and autographs, but I don't think they offer a service that authenticates whether something is game used or not. Hopefully someone else can chime in on what to look for in a game used bat. Good luck!

PSA does indeed authenticate Game Used bats through John Taube.....Why don't you join and post pictures of the bat in question to the Game Used Universe site? Perhaps you can get expert opinions up front and then decide whether to submit to PSA or not.

    Good Luck

Learn something new everyday. I agree, post some pictures of the bat and someone here might be able to give you more information before you go through the expense of submitting it.

Thanks for the information! I'll try to take pictures when I get home. I think I was hoping to know if the bat model was one Alomar used or if it was off the rack at a store as I can't find any information on the bat model. I'll try to post some pics soon.

Just a picture of the information on the knob will likely do the trick, but additional pics couldn't hurt.
  • Cool, great item!

Can you only post URL's for pictures? I can't see the attach button from my phone. I checked the knob and it shows the length and weight. I read on an eBay post that if it shows weight and length it's a store bought product? I'll try to figure out how to post the picture

Hello. I collect game used bats and may help you some. First off, Alomar used many different makes of bats. He did use Cooper and may have used R161's. Having the length and weight on the knob is appropriate for a professional model Cooper bat. Does it have his number written on the knob as well? Are there any ball marks on the barrel? You can see this by looking on the barrel for stitch impressions or ball scuffs. Any pine tar residue on the handle? There are more things to look at, but you may PM me and I can help you out.

Finally got around to creating an online album with the pics. I know the autograph is a bit smudged which sucks but got a decent price when I bought it (probably a rookie mistake)

    Just curious.

Are there any "ball marks" - you can actually see where the seam of the ball imprints in the wood - i.e. "stitch marks"

    Also, from PSA's Web

Here's a different Cooper model he used - similar size and weight.

One thing I did notice, he tended to partially tape the grip end of his bats and he put #12 on the ends of the bat making it hard to read bat specifications.

Yeah I noticed the other Cooper bat on PSA's site but couldn't find any info on this model. I don't see any stitch marks but I'll take a look again. It's mainly scuff marks that I see. I noticed Alomar also would write an A on the knob whcih this obviously doesn't have either.

    Luis,
Ok. After seeing your bat, in my opinion, it is a pro model Cooper bat. Being signed by Alomar makes it a nice collectible. It doesn't seem to be a gamer without any identifiable player use traits. Alomar did use tape, tar, number on knob, etc. But he didn't do this all the time. This model is also not one that Alomar used a lot. I've seen M356, P72 and R205 on occasions, and not to say he never used this model, either. Just not known for it. You have a nice bat. Enjoy it.
