20 Years Ago, Cal Ripken Jr. Broke a World's Record & I have Game Used Ball From the Contest

20 years ago this week (June 14th to be exact), I flew out to Kansas City with a buddy to witness Cal Jr. break the "World" Record of Consecutive games played, which was held by Japan's Sachio Kinugasa (who had played in 2215 consecutive games).

The night he broke the record, I purchased a foul ball from a fan that was hit off the bat of catcher Chris Hoiles for $50 to secure a game used ball from this record breaking game (this was pre hologram days). It's a long story, however after the game I was able to take a shuttle bus back to the hotel with Mr. Kinugasa himself and had him sign the ball on the sweet spot (and added 2215 as an inscription).

A few years later I added Cal on the ball and I'd like to think that this is the only game used ball from that record breaking contest signed by both:

here is a signed ticket (by both Kinugasa & Ripken) from that record breaking game; Note that Kinugasa signed in Japanese:

    Very unique.

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

  • I was at the game and got Cal to sign a ball we caught when it got fouled out, I also was able to have Sachio Kinugasa sign a ball that I had. Sachio was sitting across from us. Only one other person was able to get his autograph before security came

    Hiya Suzie

That's quite a story - very nice. I'd be privileged to have a ball from that game.

What brings you here? What do you collect?

Hi Stone, I collect baseball and football collectables. It's just something I started 25 years ago. I always wanted signatures on things I could leave my kids

Photobucket holds 'em hostage till you send them your firstborn son.

    I have a mac.

At this time, I scan something or download a pic, edit it with my mac and copy it DIRECTLY here - different from the old program, this one will accept pretty good sized pics/scans.
