Do you like this coin and what do you think PCGS graded it?

keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭
It's a common date Morgan Dollar with an uncommon look, probably came out of an album after a long stay in the hole. Although it looks like the obverse fields are dark all the way to the portrait that is at least partly due to the fact that they are very reflective. The coin belongs to a friend of mine, he just hasn't made up his mind to sell it to me, yet.

I give him about a month till he weakens!! image Tell me if you like it and what you think PCGS graded it. Thanks in advance.

    Yes, I like it.

It may be PL under that toning, which is not too dark for me.

Back in the day, that would have been a lock 63. Today, I wouldn't be surprised at 64.

MS-62 with a PL/DMPL obverse is my guess. The reverse is not PL at all.

I like the unique look it has to it.
    I'd say it's a 62

    MS63 no PL

Ooops, forgot: I like target toning if it has color. Not brown or black, but reds and blues and greens are great.

I think it may be 65 as the contact seems quite "shallow".

    Too dark for me, Keets.

Kinda cool the way the white portrait contrasts with dark fields.

Overall, I think it's ok but not super exiting.

I was going to guess MS63 PL but wabbit made me recheck the rev and talked me out of the PL.

The way my luck has been going with pcgs submissions (I haven't submitted in a couple years, however), the coin would have come back BB'd as 'questionable color'.

But to answer the question, I would expect it to grade 64, although Morgan dollars are not a series I am comfortable 'grading'. I just have never gotten too involved with them for some reason. Probably because they constitute 65% of all inventory at a typical coin show!

    PL MS64

the proof-like fields always seem to exaggerate hits and bag marks.

Too many marks on the obverse to be anything more than a 62. Do you really want a 62 common date Morgan Dollar?

    Not really. Too dark. MS64.

often, when we do these grading threads we actually judge the picture. many guessed MS62 correctly and I will only add that the coin isn't as dark in hand as the picture shows, there is enough blue at the rim and deep red closer to the center to make it attractive, the obverse absent the tone is DMPL quality. I am by no means a Morgan Dollar expert but I see lots of coins, this struck me as unusual because of the one-sided DMPL. maybe others can comment on how common that is.

Wow, 64s and even a 65. That is just way too much cheek action for me - I'm in the 62 crowd.

The 1879 S Morgan is one of the jewels of Morgan dollars. It is usually well struck and has great luster. I have found that proof likes far outnumber DMPLs. Finding a 1879 S with both the obverse and reverse being DMPL is rare.

One sided DMPLs are not uncommon, especially for 78-82 San Francisco strikes.

I'm in the 64 or higher group. I can't see any gouges to really keep it from these grades. I'm not sure I like the dark toning though (maybe ricko rubbing off on me).
Edited to add, this is why I'm not a grader. I posted before I saw the coin as graded by PCGS.
