Question about OC qualifier rule

Quick question - If an otherwise mint card is submitted to PSA without a "no qualifier" request on the submission form, and falls outside the centering guidelines for a PSA 9, however within the centering guidelines for a PSA 8 (70/30 centering), would the card grade a PSA 9(oc) or a PSA 8?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts/opinions

It would probably grade a straight 8, as the OC qualifier is typically (but not always) used when qualifier issue represents a two-grade (or greater) difference.

Also, I personally don't believe a card with 70/30 centering is at all likely to get an 8, though I'm sure there are exceptions.

It really depends on the grader(s). When you get to "borderline" calls, a card might be a 9OC but with centering that allows it to still make an 8, you could get the 8. However, you might also get a straight 7.

Technically, you should get the 8 if card is within the centering required for an 8 and otherwise mint.

Certain years; 1971,1975 to mention only a couple, also seem to be harshly graded.

Post a good scan of the card in question and let the experts here pre grade it for you!

For a card to grade PSA 8, grading standards require centering to be 65/35 to 70/30 on front and no worse than 90/10 on back.

Yep, that's what they say, but every card I've ever submitted that was approaching 70/30 with NQ requested has come back a 7.

The overall grade is based on other factors besides centering though that is what many collectors focus primarily on. Different graders may also be more or less strict on borderline cards, too.
