NEWP - 1892 Indian Head Cent

oih82w8oih82w8 Posts: 12,565 ✭✭✭✭✭
I picked up a nice 1892 Indian Head Cent and was wondering if someone could aid in attributing a possible Snow Variety. I realize that there are numerous varieties per date and Rick Snow has at least one detailed book along with the Cherry Picker Guide, which has one variety that there is a "bar" within the "2" as a Pick-Up Point. I do not have access to my CPG at work and was discussing this coin with a co-worker. The "8" and "9" appear to have some repunching as well. These are the sellers cropped images;

Could it be PR4? You didn't give a photo of PR4.

None of the business strikes seem to match.

Maybe smoeone made a really cool counterfeit.

Usually the Indian head collectors chime in.

Looks like a nice piece anyway.

"Secondary digits aee evident to the north oft the 8 and 9. There is a vertical bar, within the opening of the 2, which some believe is a 1. However, most specialists believe this is nothing more than a damaged date punch. A very minor doubled-die reverse is paired with this obverse die."

Are you saying this is a Snow-1 ? If so there are some positioning

    problems with that.

That was the description note from the CPG of the 1892 Snow-1.

The Snow-1 Variety is what I initially thought it could be, there are similarities, but it is not a slam dunk. I also noticed a few Proof 92's had a similar vertical bar at the opening of the 2, but not apparent RPD on the 8 or 9.

Perhaps I am wanting to see the RPD of the 8 and 9 on the OP coin to the North and West (upper loops of the 8 and 9). This just may be another of the waiting to be discovered varieties...I will take some close ups with my USB microscope when it arrives.

Yes I agree, it's an interesting coin & would be nice if there

could be some really close-up clear images of both sides.

Take note of where the ribbon falls below the bust & points to

the right half of the 8 & to none of the 9 . Also the 1 is

positioned further right from the bust point & points to the

3rd pearl, where as on S-1, & S-2 the 1 is nearer the tip

of the bust point & points to pearl 2.

Your coin appears to have repunching on the outside lower

loop of the 8 , which may just be a broken die.

I can not make out any of the rev. markers for S-1 & S-2

(they both use the same rev. die) i.e. die striations, or

doubling on the right wreath veins, but it could be a die stage

    issue.

Also check to see if there are any indications of MPD's in the

dentils below the date, or any die cracks on both surfaces.

There may be a MPD in the denticles below the 9, visible in the OP.

I kind of see something below the 9 between dentils, but I don't see any repunching in the date.

    Looking forward to the close-ups.

I received the coin, and like Rick Snow mentioned, it does indeed look like a proof or "proof-like" with the reflective fields. The "bar" is still there at the opening of the 2, but there is nothing in the denticles, possible lint on the holder during imaging. The apparent RPD were more than likely a refraction of the holder on the coin. Frosty devices on reflective fields, but doubt that it Cameo. I sent PCGS an email about having a "second look" at to determine if it was mislabeled as MS versus PR.

She sure is pretty, but too much of a coin for my 19th Century Everyman Set.
