Just read here that it will be auctioned off at the National Sports Collector's Convention on August 4th. Article says it could go as high as $500k. Something makes me think it'll go higher, though. What are you thoughts?
The card is a beauty for sure although the centering is not perfect. Being a population 1 will send the big money chasing for bragging rights for sure. Going to be fun to watch. Here is a link to my prize Gretzky which I consider from time to time to submit for review on a long shot attempt for bump to 10. This one here is the closest to 10 that I have seen and I have held a lot of the Gretzky 9s over the years. Looks like a 10 to me with centering again being the only potential critique to my eyes which isn't any worse than the 10 up for auction. Then again I might be biased.
Amazing card but I would prefer a better centered PSA 9 without reverse stains or marks.
I think it sells for $425K...but who knows...in this market, at the National, it might fetch $2mm.
Agree with you on owning a 9 vs this particular 10.
sushihotwings - I had a PSA 9 like yours many years ago that I purchased from the late Gerry Chartrand. Gerry pulled the card from a box he opened and was certain it would get a 10. Your PSA 9 is one of the nicest out there for sure!
In some ways the O Pee chee Gretzky rookies are like original works of art. No two are exactly the same especially with the rough cut which modern card collectors often fail to appreciate. A link to this auction was also posted in another forum more for modern cards most posters were like OMG look at those terrible edges. How did it get a 10 etc.
Some people argue that a clean-edged Gretzky rookie MUST be trimmed, but I've seen 1979 OPC's come from the pack with clean edges. Not razor sharp, but clean. If you ask me, a card with rough edges due to a dulled blade/wire is inferior to one with a clean cut by a freshly installed blade/wire at the factory.

I agree. It has been a long while since I opened up packs but I believe it was one or two cards per pack that were clean. Going through my raw sets I have definitely found cards that were clean and they were not sheet cut.
It will be interesting to see what the card will sell for, although I wish another auction company was auctioning off the card.
I've seen plenty of clean edge cards from packs too. In my experience nearly all of the razor sharp edged cards had the blue printing line on the back which would support the theory that these are from a first, or early printing, before the wires dulled. Then one has to say, should a card get a 10 with a blue printing line on the back? Like sushi says, they're like "original works of art" and that "no two are exactly the same" - another reason I have always loved this card.
Should be fun to watch. Also of note I recently noticed that a 2nd PSA 10 Topps Rookie popped. I wonder if that will come to market in the near future.

I think Wayne Gretzky should buy this card since he already owned the Wagner. My head would explode if that happened.

I do wonder now that you mention it how many of his own RC Gretzky owns.
