Danby, NY, Clark and Howell, $3

Neither PMG nor the seller seem to understand what this note is.

It's not from NYC and Doty & Bergen are the printers.

These are essentially generic scrip that could be printed for many different merchants quickly and cheaply. In many cases, the only way to know who actually issued the notes is the signature - in this case we would need to figure out who Clark and Nowell were, and where they had set up shop.

These notes were used in Ohio by a handful of merchants, as well as obviously New York and probably a few other states.

    It was mis-attributed as well.

It's what I called it in the title, a "Danby, NY, Clark and Howell, $3", but neither the correct issuer nor the place of issue are identified by the holder or the seller. It might be easier to sell if "Danby" or "Clark & Howell" were in the description, possibly to someone from the Danby area or a Clark or Howell, or especially a Clark or Howell from the Danby area.

Heywood's $2 is from the Equinox Store of Manchester, VT. Most of the Equinox Store notes that I have seen are dated June 1862 and have Cone and Burton signatures. Heywood's is slightly earlier (Nov 1861) and has a different signature that ends with "&Co." at lower right. Probably much rarer than the Cone & Burton notes. But now Heywood needs a Cone and Burton $2, too.
