40 years of Memphis memories

goldengolden Posts: 9,607 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have attended all 40 IPMS in Memphis. Sometimes I went as a bourse dealer, sometimes as an exhibitor and sometimes just walking the floor. At some of the shows I only stayed a few hours and at others I stayed for 2,3 or even all four days. I have enjoyed each and every show.

I have great memories of the show at the Holiday Inn Rivermont. I especially recall the days where my Dad went with me to act as my bourse table assistant. Those were some great times!

There are a lot of friends that were at Memphis who are no longer with us. Some of them were Sam Bettis, T. Homer Brooks, Amon Carter,Jr., Lou F. Davison,Sr., Marie Jones, Paul Garland, John T. Hickman, Carroll Hilliard, Curt Iversen, Art Kagin, Art Leister, Vernon H. ( Ossie ) and Helen Oswald and Jasper Payne. I have lots of great memories of each one.

I never went to any of the barbecue restaurants in Memphis. I learned about a restaurant called Anderton's the second or third year of Memphis. It was a great seafood and steak restaurant with superb service. I always went there. Some years I ate there all three nights. It was started just after the war and run by the same family. It closed a few years ago and the building is now gone. Great food!

Over the years I have purchased a lot of notes at Memphis. Now my want list is tough and I have not bought anything at Memphis since 2012. The better notes now go to auction.

A number of the dealers that I talked to remarked that the show has changed. Dealers in foreign notes now make up almost half of the bourse.

I will not be going to Kansas City next year or in future. It is just too far to go with little chance for me to find anything for my collection. A number of the dealers that I talked to said that they would not be going either.

Memphis has been great! Thanks for the memories, thanks for the memories.

Yep, many memories from many IPMS in Memphis. Got my first Exhibitor plaque in 1983

at the Rivermont. As golden mentioned many friends are no longer with us and to

his list I would add my paper money teacher/mentor, Steve Taylor.

I noticed that and have noticed a trend where world notes are starting to outpace U.S. notes at shows and that is very disappointing to me as a die hard U.S. only collector who just doesn't have any interest in world notes and never will.

  • I am with larry510. I started collecting long ago coming from the coin community. Collecting US small currency, I figured if everything went south I could at least buy milk and eggs with my accumulation. It was not much of a hobby as there were few references for US small. Back then, the "real" collectors traded in large notes, fractionals, confederates, colonials, obsoletes, mpcs...etc, but I could see the potential. Back in the day at the NYC shows there was maybe one or two dealers that carried world notes. Being a friendly guy I would go to all the tables looking for goodies for my collection, even the world guys with there pristine stacks of untouched colorful notes. One time one of the "world" guys accused me of being a "rag picker" when I asked if he had any US material. I told him I may be a rag picker but at least my collection had monetary value while his piles could only substitue for Scott toilet paper. I guess I was a smart a#% even back then. And with that I too am sad to see the eclipse of US material by world. Kind of a metaphor for the bigger picture.

The paper money market is ever changing. IMO, there will be a resurgence of U.S in the future, and very likely a big resurgence of small size.
  • luckybucks I believe you are correct. Somewhere in one of these threads I recall someone saying that for the sake of the hobby and getting new collectors interested it is a sad state when "the book" is some 6 years or so out of date, referring to the 10th ed of The Standard Guide to Small Size U.S. Paper Money. I see so much knowledge and dedication to the hobby here that it would seem that some sort of master online compilation supported by the many members here and their various interests could offer up an encyclopedia of sorts. Possibly the webmaster uspapermoney.info could add or build this into his effort. I am even thinking that a compilation of knowledgeable threads from this blog and the two or three other blogs that exist could be mined and organized. Paper books are so yesterday and the effort to put them out is costly and time consuming. Don't get me wrong I am an old-timer and love my books but going forward online is the only way. Any thoughts anybody??

Eventually someone will put out a new book. The thing to do now is buy and sit on material ...for how long is the ultimate question

I agree it sure would be nice to have a new book dedicated to small size. Also glad to see that the greensheet has been making great improvements and is now worth subscribing to again.

Be assured that some of us are comtemplating a new small-size book.

I have contacted the publishers of the SSG to express my interest in continuing that guide, but have not received any responses from them.

I was walking back to the Sheraton about 10 pm when the cops and a fire truck were racing their ways to the riverside. I didn't know then what was going on.

I often hear about a down market BUT I say without reservation that IF a rare small size note were to the market the price would be high. IF Jim H decided to sell his notes tomorrow they would sell for moon money. There is currently a lot of people looking for the same thing and very few looking for what is being offered.

Yes agree 100%! A lot of competition from the same collector's looking for the same thing and not a lot of exciting stuff on the market right now to satisfy. Unfortunately most of my collector friend's go after the same notes and grades that I want which drives up prices on these certain notes. Also the market has really weaked on lower grade CU notes (60-64 range) for the more common notes. Everyone wants gem or better now.

delistamps - YES that would be one example. Nice!
At one point I used to have people, dealers and collectors like, that would take shots at me because they knew I needed a note.
Today I don't even get any offers. I am not sure which is worse.
That said, my current want list is somewhere on the BST forum and no one would lose money selling me a note on that list .

A group of us were on the quiet back patio at Wet Whilly's and heard a loud bang and saw orange sparks flying 8 feet in the air. The runaway driver hit a van ripped it's fended off and he was dragging it down the road! Way too close for comfort!!!

Jim, I picked up something really special for you in Memphis! If I can get home at a reasonable hour I will get it scanned and post it.

It's a gift, and I can guarantee it's something you don't have yet! image
