Advice on purchasing a collection

Hello.. looking for advice. I have the chance to purchase a nice collection of 1950's baseball. The collection is several thousand dollars. The problem is the collection is in another state and too far to travel to purchase personally. I have seen many photos of the collection and spoke to the seller a couple of times. A family member collected them as a child they are now selling the collection. My dilemma is that the person selling does not have paypal. How can I pay for this collection and be insured in case they don't deliver? The seller seems trustworthy but this is a good chunk of money and I just don't want to get burned. Suggestions are welcome.

Thanks- Claude

Tell them to sign up for paypal. For your security and theirs.

Or use this https://www.escrow.com/ and each of you pay 1/2 the fees.

Them signing up for paypal would be much less hassle.

I agree, have them sign up for paypal. It's easy to do, and it's used more and more frequently for a lot of things.

Perhaps you can see if a board member is close by and you can send payment via money order to the board member. He can meet with the seller and the ship you the cards?

  • There are a lot of red flags in the scenario you describe. If you can't personally go pick it up and pay, I would pass.
  • If it's a good chunk of money and the seller feels you are being fair price wise why wouldn't they make the sale as easy and painless as possible. If they really wanted to sell that would be the way to go otherwise I'd pass personally. Besides like a few have stated how hard is it to get a paypal account. If you really want the collection just pay a little more to help them with fees then they can just transfer there new found thousands right into an account of there choosing. Seems simple but if they resist that then I'd feel something might be wrong. Hope you get the cards. Good luck.

I would have to see something like this in person. If I couldn't make the travel arrangements to get there before giving them my money I would pass.

All turned out ok. Paid with cashiers check and crossed my finters. Bought 1953 Bowman color lot of 122 different cards for $1500. Cards arrived yesterday. I think I did ok and transaction went smoothly. Scanned a few of the highlights.

The Mantle alone probably got you close to breaking even. Barring any surface wrinkles, I would imagine it grade out to a 4, maybe 5. Great purchase!

    I love the Reese!
