Glad it bought it when I did

Looking at the prices on cards that continue to rise in value I was just wondering what cards you guys have bought in the past that have seen a nice return. Back in 2013 I bought a Bird/Magic rookie PSA 9 for $618. Sure glad I did.

To make this even more interesting, it should be only if purchased within the last 12 months.

The biggest lesson I've learned in this hobby, and in life, is that if you have a strong conviction, you owe it to yourself to see it through. Don't sell yourself, or your investments, short. Unless the facts change. Then sell it all.

I was just thinking about this earlier this week remembering the 2014 National in Cleveland and I was looking for a few 1956 Mantle's in PSA 8. There were about 6-8 in the room all going for between $3200-3800. There was also an 8.5 for sale for $6750. A year later I found a nicely centered one for around $4k. Now the 8's go for $8-10k and 8.5's go for $16-20k.

I then looked at what Clemente and Aaron 8's went for that same National per VCP - all I can say is wow! Had any of us known what was going to happen every centered Aaron and Clemente rookie from PSA 5-8 would have been gobbled up.

I've always bought what I collected and not much into considering investment.

Now, maybe that wasn't the best thing I've ever done?

Back in '95 - these were insane prices - now?

Nothing huge but I bought an 89 topps bo Jackson psa 10 for around $44 right before it exploded to like $200.

I also bought around eight 87-88 fleer Michael Jordan second year cards in grades ranging from 7 to 8.5 over the last 3 years or so. These cards are INSANE right now. I think I have 12 second year Jordan's with some being raw. Those cards are my crack.

Yesterday, I purchased a bottle of beer. Today, I resold the bottle of beer as "Michael Jordan PSA 10" Bottle Of Beer! and made enough money to buy Japan.

Not cards but there are quite a few blue chip NES/SNES games I have that I was very fortunate to get a few years back before their value got a little too crazy...I hope that bubble will burst at some point because I like building my collections for fun, for the challenge and the journey...not so "they're worth something someday"...they're worth something now, to me!

Back in June of last year I sold a BBCE wrapped 1980 Topps Baseball Wax Box for $875 and immediately purchased for the exact same $875 a BBCE wrapped 1986 Topps Football Wax Box.

    I purchased my '55 Koufax card in 1970 or 1980 for somewhere between $20 - $50 (don't remember exactly). In 2005 it became a PSA 8!

Late 60's and early to mid 70's non-sports
  • Here is a list of some of the better cards I purchased in the last 12 months:

    Sep 10, 2015 - 1985 TOPPS 1984 USA TEAM #401 MARK McGWIRE RC PSA 10 Paid $572
    Aug 10, 2015 - 1967 Topps #400 Bob Roberto Clemente PSA NM-MT 8 Paid $218
    Aug 5, 2015 - 1952 Bowman #101~~ MICKEY MANTLE~~PSA 6 Paid $1625
    June 29, 2015 - 1986-87 Fleer MICHAEL JORDAN Sticker #8 PSA 9 MINT Paid $425
    June 28, 2015 - 1986-87 Fleer MICHAEL JORDAN Sticker #8 PSA 9 MINT Paid $410
    June 27, 2015 - 1987 FLEER #59 MICHAEL JORDAN BULLS HOF PSA 9 Paid $195
    June 7, 2015 - 1976 Topps #148 Walter Payton PSA NM-MT 8 Paid $288

All in all these cards have increased in sales price quite a bit since I have purchased them. I think the 1952 mantle could sell today for close to 2x what I paid for it. She is a beauty:
