Larissa Thessaly horse country

One of my recent buys, on the Larissa plains in Thessaly Greece warhorses were bred for the Greek state cities and their big neighbour Macedonia. Thessaly was integrated in Macedonia by Philip II to secure his supply of warhorses for his army.
his son Alexander the great rode a warhorse called Buchephalus from Thessaly.
When he went to war in Persia he took 2000 Thessalian cavalry men with him, they played an important role in his victories over King Darius III of Persia.
