I could not get past the dates on the letters... Very sad and difficult times.

Very neat. Paris, 1940. Wow. What an ominous summer.

Interestingly, the letters seem to be "business as usual" despite what was, or was about, to happen. The French letter is at the end of the "phony war" and just a couple of weeks before the German offensive in the west started in earnest. Despite the optimism, one wonders how "doing our best to pullup" (business) actually worked out and if payment for the 3 coins were able to reach the company before the Germans reached Paris.

The Spink letter is at the end of the first month of the Battle of Britain and almost two months after Dunkirk but is also very transactional. Perhaps Spinks had a big sign up for the staff and customers that read: "KEEP CALM AND COLLECT ANCIENTS!"

Both are really wonderful artifacts of the time. Congrats.

Probably "Poitou", so perhaps some kind of medieval French coin?
