Counterfeit Book or There Are No Copyright Laws in The Ukraine

I have been seeing these for a while now, they always seem to be from Eastern Europe. Clearly not an official Spink & Son printing.

Sad!

I lived in Ukraine from late 2008 to early 2010 and there are copyright laws, and many many laws about a lot of things - but they are never enforced. It was possible to buy pirated movies in the PAL format, CD's. One thing we noticed is that there is a law about underage drinking but it is very easy for children to buy alcohol as long as they have money.

I guess they have problems there bigger than worrying about pirated coin books.

Yup, I grew up in Ukraine and that's pretty accurate. There are laws, but enforcement is severely lacking. Plus if the crime is minor, there are many ways to get out of any trouble with the law.

Wow, they're pirating books, too. Guess I shouldn't be surprised.

How could you tell, aside from the seller calling the author "David Spear" (sic)? image

(At least the cover doesn't have that spelling error.)

PS- Love the auction description. I now have an Eastern European boss, so I am getting used to language and syntax like that in company emails...

Noticed that with traffic enforcement, which was nothing more than a corrupt shakedown of motorists. A couple of times we were pulled over in checkpoints and questioned and had to pay a "fine" for some made up offense. And it wasn't like in N. America where the cops have to pull in behind your car and run checks etc - they sit on the side of the road and wave a baton and you try not to soil your pants while pulling over.

Of course while I was there they made a law necessitating court hearings for traffic offenses - but in practice I never saw or heard about it actually happening to anybody.

Love Ukraine, but I am glad most of my family is here now and wish I could convince the ones remaining in Donets'k to get out while the going is good.

Yeah, the going is not so good for Donetsk already. My aunt packed up and left that city last year and things are going to get worse before they get better.

It is horrible how divisive the conflict has been there, literally tearing families, long time friends etc apart. Really saw that a couple of years ago on VK.com and OK.ru. I have been able to navigate it pretty neutrally but a lot of people can't. Some of my former associates there had to leave because of being ethnically Ukrainian, others there are very much in favour of the current government there. And we have the same stuff even in immediate family there.

Back in the 60's & 70's most of the book pirates were from Taiwan. Nowadays anyone with a copy of a book and a scanner can be a pirate no matter where they live.

I remember my stepmother used to have a bunch of pirate LP records she'd bought in the Far East. One was "The Bet of Gilbert & Sullivan". (I thought Gilbert & Sullivan were composers, not gamblers.)

I was bored to death in Odes(sa) a while back and bought a Chris Isaac cd in a bazaar - One of the songs is tracked "Sam Francisco Nights"
